Qatar have GE and at least some of theirs have grey engines. From what I've read the engine casing is the same for both GE and RR and the issue with paint is to do with laminar flow. I think the white looks silly but perhaps VKA's engine casings were painted before Boeing approved 'colours other than white'? Maybe silver or grey will come with later deliveries? Also I think the white wing and tail surfaces don't affect the 'look' of the plane ('the vibe of the thing'!?) because their horizontal surfaces so a little less visible.

From what I have heard, only white and grey are approved for the laminar flow, but customers can choose other colours at a drag penalty.

I think you will find the requirement, or more to the point recomendation for white or grey applies to the engine cowling, not the body, which is what was being disucssed. Something to do with paint thickness and as you mentioned laminar flow.

Rowan McKeever
14th August 2013, 01:47 PM
Yeah that's right Ash, from what I've read it's about the engine cowling and it's the number of coats required to get the darker colours like BA blue, makes the paint layer thicker obviously and disrupts the laminar flow.

Yeah I was talking about the engines, I didn't mean the colours for the body.

As part of the B787 introduction, Jetstar is hosting a "Dream Terminal" in Cairns, Gold Coast, Melbourne and Sydney.

The terminal provides visitors with an authentic Dreamliner experience and includes seat displays, interactive window and giveaways.

At present there are no domestic bays on T2 at YSSY that can handle the B787, so I don't expect we'll see it here until it starts internatonal ops. Bay 49 is still B747 capable, so that may become an option in future. Alternatively, Bay 13 at T3 is already set up for B787 ops, so perhaps Qantas may come to the party if needed?

What stops a 787 from using another gate?

Nigel C
28th September 2013, 10:52 AM
Size (for both length and wing tip clearance for other bays), no stop bar markings on the ground, aerobridge clearance from engines etc, NIG calibration, refuelling hydrant points can also come into play, equipment clearance and storage areas, pedestrian walkways etc.

In essence, the CADD department need to make sure they can meet all the required standards for use on any particular bay (this process gets done for all aircraft on all bays), and if restrictions are needed for that or adjacent bays, then they will be spelt out in the apron operating procedures.

Will Jetstar introduce any new routes with the 787? If so, where? If not, what current routes are they gonna increase capacity?
Or will Qantas be the ones making the new routes. Im aware all Jetstar A332's are going to Qantas once all the 787s are delivered, which hints what destinations will receive the 787. Yet again, will these A332's off to Qantas supply new routes?

Max C
29th September 2013, 07:24 AM
It's been said that the B787's will replace the JQ A332's which, when sent to QF will replace the B763's.

I'd imagine that wherever the JQ A332's go now, the B787's will go in the future. Any route expansion will probably not happen until the A332 fleet has been replaced.

Only 10 A332's and 5 738's to replace 16 B763's means there won't be much, if any new flights anytime soon.

Max C

Yep, and they're replacing the last 5 734's.

Currently net fleet growth is pretty much zilch.

Not to mention the upcoming 744 retirements and the fact that once the A330's go in for their cabin refurb, they'll be at least 1 frame short for a year or so.

Steve S... 2
29th September 2013, 01:40 PM

Ash W

There's a few 717s as well :D

That are essentially replacing the remaining 734's.

So really no new capacity at Qantas domestic, just JQ A330s's and new 738's to replace 763 and the 717's will see the end of the 734's.

Jetstar to fly Dreamliners

AAP

Budget carrier Jetstar will fly its new high-tech Dreamliner aircraft from Melbourne to the Gold Coast, starting in November.

Qantas and Jetstar chief executives Alan Joyce and Jayne Hrdlicka have toured Boeing's factory in Seattle, as the group prepares to take delivery of its first Dreamliner in Melbourne on Wednesday.

Ahead of the maiden flight to Australia, Jetstar has announced that tickets for the first Boeing 787 Dreamliner flight would soon go on sale for travel between Melbourne and the Gold Coast on November 13.

But this is subject to approval from the Civil Aviation Safety Authority, which is required for all new aircraft types.

Dreamliner services will also operate between Melbourne and Cairns before international services are launched towards the end of 2013.

Qantas has ordered 14 Dreamliners, which will gradually replace Jetstar's Airbus A330 aircraft which fly to long-haul destinations like Honolulu, Phuket, Bali and Tokyo.

The A330s then will be moved into the Qantas mainline fleet, as part of a plan to retire ageing and less fuel efficient Boeing 767s by mid-2015.

Qantas also has options for 50 Boeing 787s from calendar 2016.

During the factory floor tour, Mr Joyce addressed reliability concerns about the Dreamliner.

"The 787, like any new aircraft, has had a number of teething problems with its introduction but it's actually had a smoother introduction than the 777 which is the last large aircraft that Boeing introduced," he said.

Last month, budget airline Norwegian Air Shuttle demanded Boeing take back a Dreamliner and fix a faulty hydraulic pump after only 30 days in service.

"It's important to distinguish reliability from safety. Sometimes in people's minds they can be really concerned," Mr Joyce said.

"Reliability in new aircraft takes a while to get up there. It's not a safety issue.

"We're very comfortable this is an extremely safe aircraft."

Boeing 787 vice president and general manager Larry Loftis said the ambition to build the most technologically advanced aircraft in five decades had been a logistical challenge since production began in 2007.

"From a reliability standpoint ... we're working to make sure the airplane continually improves and becomes more and more reliable," he told reporters.

"We put a lot of new technology in this aircraft and over-estimated the ability to bring this new technology to market in the time frame which we committed."

The Dreamliner is 20 per cent more fuel efficient than comparable wide-bodied aircraft with about 300 seats.

It uses carbon fibre composite graphite instead of traditional aluminium.

But 50 Dreamliner jets were grounded globally in January when lithium-ion batteries caught fire on two Japanese airlines.

They returned to the skies in April but an emergency transmitter on a Boeing 787 caught fire at London's Heathrow airport in July on an Ethiopian Airlines plane.

Mr Joyce said the lighter Dreamliners would reduce fuel costs in the Qantas group, and help enable the airline to have an even younger fleet than Singapore Airlines "in the next couple of years which we haven't seen in a long time".

So maiden passenger service will be MEL - OOL, followed by MEL - CNS.

Really sad as no SYD service is planned yet and it simply means Qantas is once again missing the big smoke where the most able passengers are at. :(

It is realistic that they are deploying B788s on multiple flights on one route to ensure reliability.

Jetstar CEO Jayne Hrdlicka, who was also on the historic delivery flight after signing the papers at the delivery ceremony, announced that Bali would be the 787s first overseas destination.
"I'm delighted to announce that our first scheduled international service will depart Melbourne to Bali, one of our most popular destinations, with the 787 operating a daily service over the summer period,'' she said.
"Many families will be taking a well-earned holiday in Bali this summer and will have the opportunity to fly on this amazing aircraft, and I can say from experience that flying on the 787 is a destination in itself.
"Tickets are now on sale for our first 787 flight to Bali on December 18 and we expect to add more destinations including Japan, Hawaii and Singapore to the schedule as we receive more aircraft.''

So today's flaunted display flight from MEL-OOL-MEL was cancelled. Now this, I hope none of you were booked on the inaugural revenue flight meant for 13 November MEL-CNS has now been pushed back to 14 November. The November 13 flight will now be operated with an A320.

According to the JQ website Nov 13 flight to OOL is still a Dreamliner service, no Dreamliner service to OOL on Nov 14.

Oliver Gigacz
11th October 2013, 06:23 PM
Right looks like the wires were crossed.

Earlier today Jetstar posted on their FaceBook page today that Dreamliner flights will begin on Nov 14th.

They have since confirmed on Twitter that this is wrong and that the JQ432 on Nov 13 is still scheduled to fly..

There was never going to be a CNS flight on the 13th? CNS flights were always going to begin on the 14th...

Firstly, your post makes no sense Oliver. (read it above)

Secondly, how could I have been invited to cover the first revenue flight on November 13 if it didn't exist?

From the very beginning the inaugural flight has been MEL-OOL-MEL on November 13th.

JQ435 (OOL-MEL)

There seems to be some issues that CASA isn't allowing it to fly anywhere or its getting classification to fly.

Was due to fly to the Gold Coast on Friday this week, but that never happened. There is talk this subject to CASA will happen on Tuesday this week.

If it's only a few days delay, I can't see that harming the flight schedule for Nov 13 onwards.

VH-VKA arrives in Sydney at 2100(18/10) from OOL as JST1614 then will depart on the 19th to Melbourne as JQ1615 at 1700 apparently, according to SACL, from Gate 58 at T2.

Nigel C
18th October 2013, 08:12 AM
According to this it's arriving at T1 http://www.sydneyairport.com.au/flights/flight-arrivals-and-departures/airport-visit-planner/sydney/jq1614/0

And it's departing off Bay 33 at T1 http://www.sydneyairport.com.au/flights/flight-arrivals-and-departures/airport-visit-planner/melbourne/jq1615/1

Bay 58 at T2 can't handle a B787....it only just squeezes an A320 on it in terms of length.

What a great future of technical problems that awaits us. No excitement factor for me until they actually manage to iron out the problems and have an acceptable dispatch rate. I'm not one to care too much about those fancy flexing wings or the great big windows.

Besides they're too quiet anyway! Crap from a spotters perspective, they'll be boring after a few months.

JQ 787s will be operating international services ex SYD so what would be the point of famil/proving runs at the domestic terminal. That wouldn't simulate the in-service operation.

Hi

I have a mate that is keen to be on the first Pax service to Cooly.
The schedule shows Wednesday 13th 11 am Departure out of Melbourne
(JQ432) and returning as JQ435 at 1530.

Is this correct?
Will -VKA have a 3hr 25 turn around or head somewhere else before doing
JQ435?

Ian Gains
21st October 2013, 11:54 AM
David, that is correct according to the Jetstar website. It isn't going anywhere between the two flights you mentioned. On Friday last week, there were still plenty of seats on the MEL-OOL leg for $149.

I believe that this return flight to OOL is VKA's only scheduled work on the 13th, so JQ may be using the longer time on the ground at OOL for further staff training etc.
Thanks Oliver. I heard that JQ had stopped the price beat on the 787 flights but I'm unsure of this.
Does anyone know why the return flight to MEL was so expensively priced on the 13th ?

Oliver Gigacz
22nd October 2013, 10:41 AM
A friend of mine used the price beat on the return flight a few days ago.

Trent Hopkinson
22nd October 2013, 12:42 PM
I also noticed the return flight from OOL was well up past $400.

The next day's flight to Cairns was $179 when I purchased it. I upgraded to Biz class for $26 extra, and used the POLi payment method to avoid credit card fees.

I'm not flying the return on the 787, because I wanna try this "spotting from up a mountain" thing at Cairns, and watch the 787 actually take off, so I'll be returning later that day.

I always find it interesting to see who is listed as the aircraft owner. Now I know it is all about how their finance is structured, but with most Qantas/Jetstar a/c they are owned by leasing companies clearly owned by Qantas, sometimes Qantas direct and other times real leasing companies or offshore shelf companies. VKA being a case in point as it is listed as owned by a Japanese company calledSL JURA CO. LTD.

That was a great flight. The cabin was lovely. We got a free lunch etc. I found the seats quite comfortable for 9 across. The level of recline at fully upright position was good too, I felt no need to recline back, like I do in a 737 etc. The only issue was I couldn't find the map on the IFE, however I found the Flightpath button after we landed. I'd searched everywhere. Strange. Also, the cabin pressure and humidity was noticeable. No dry mouth, my feet didn't swell up ( I know, it was a short flight but I do get those issues sometimes). It'll be fantastic for long haul.

Grahame Hutchison

A really great flight on the Dreamliner, cruising at FL410 from Melbourne to the Gold Coast. The first impression as you walk into the cabin is one of space and light. The mood lighting, coupled with the very large windows and sculptured overhead luggage bins brings a very spacious feel.

The economy seat was what you would expect with this density of seating, but still comfortable. The seat back IFE was very good, plenty of movies and TV programs to watch, the Flight Path tracking was excellent and used a satellite style map. I think that the improved cabin air freshness, humidity, and lower pressure, are all noticeable.

The Jetstar cabin crew and other staff were very helpful and friendly, they supplied a lunch box containing a sandwich, cake and water. Plenty of media on board filming all over the aircraft, and interviewing passengers.

Towards the end of the flight they drew three seat numbers out of a bag, and the lucky passengers received a $500 Jetstar travel voucher.

There was applause on landing and the aircraft taxied to the northern end of the terminal, and passengers used the forward stairs, with a short walk across the Tarmac. This was perfect and allowed close up photographs of the aircraft. Before I left the aircraft, I visited the flight deck for a couple of photos, and also got the Captain to sign my Jetstar "Congratulations Certificate".

This is a great aircraft, and I think passengers will just love it.

Well done Jetstar and Boeing.

Photographs when I get home this evening.

Photographs on previous page.

Flying back to Sydney on JQ413 operated by Airbus A320 VH-VGY, the onboard experience was an amazing contrast. The cabin seemed very confined, like a cigar tube with small punched windows, and the overhead lockers stretched out almost two and a half seat widths. I could only see out my small window, and the one on the opposite side of the row. By contrast, even sitting in an aisle seat, I felt like I had a window seat, and looking around I could see out many windows on both side of the cabin - this is a major plus for the Dreamliner. When the sun is beaming in on current aircraft, you generally just have to close the window, but on the Dreamliner you have five tint positions, just like wearing sun glasses when set in the middle settings.

The Dreamliner is definitely going to be a big hit with passengers, and a little challenging for airlines without the Dreamliner - a great cabin experience for passengers and 20% less fuel burn from an operational point of view.

What a busy day, three flights, three States, two airlines, and of course the B787 DREAMLINER.

Excellent review and pics Grahame. I enjoyed my flight today to from Melbourne I just got home on JQ 439 Operated by A320 VH-VFJ and you could see the difference. I had an aisle seat and could hardly see out the windows. On the 787 I was able to video from my 34B seat.

I agree it will be a hit with travellers but the Jetstar aircraft have too many seats in them.

That was a great idea re the certificate signing.

One thing about the PaxEx I'll struggle with on "regular" planes is the tiny windows. It was great to be able to look up more and also see ahead a bit from the seats in front. Great view.

Was that a 07 departure Grahame, or a really tight turn off 34R? Doesn't look like the MARUB?

Grahame Hutchison

A right turn off 34R Rowan.

I have never been on that side of the aircraft for this departure before with a camera at the ready - the second image is an interesting view of the airport. The pilot announced that we would make the right turn at 500ft and track out to sea for 30km, presumably to assure passengers that this was normal procedure.

On the first of Grahame's photos of his departure from runway 34R it looks as though the aircraft (767?) is heading south, which it is, but in the second photo the right turn is reducing as the pilot is about to intercept the 075 radial to turn left and track east out to sea towards Marub. The track east out to sea is to allow the plane to climb above arriving traffic approaching runways 34L & R from the south.

As a side issue, the photo showing Botany Bay and the Kurnell peninsula begs the question as to why jet aircraft are not allowed to depart from 16R from 11:00 pm to 6:00 am. I can't see many houses under the flightpath and what few there are have double glazing, insulation and other noise reduction methods installed thanks to yours and my taxes.

I was impressed with the Dreamliner's climbout performance on the "First Flight" from Melbourne to the Gold Coast, so I tracked it out of Melbourne this afternoon on FlightRadar24.

From liftoff, it climbed straight to FL410 in just 20 minutes and 145nm from Tullamarine - this was overhead Walbundrie in southwest New South Wales. At the final stages of the climb it was climbing at 1,500 fpm, but overall at 2,050 fpm.

From http://www.ausbt.com.au/jetstar-s-boeing-787-to-start-melbourne-auckland-flights

Jetstar will run one of its new Boeing 787 Dreamliners between Melbourne and Auckland next year.

However, the trans-Tasman 787 service will run for just one month, from February 26 to March 28, 2014, with seats now on sale.

"While many New Zealanders may not be planning a long-haul trip, this is a great opportunity to try out the aircraft that everyone's talking about, on a Tasman flight" said Jetstar's NZ chief Grant Kerr.

Jetstar's first Boeing 787 will begin international service on the Melbourne-Bali route from tomorrow, Wednesday December 18, after a month-long series of domestic flights between its Melbourne base and the Gold Coast and Cairns.

Brian,

There are different types of test flights nominally "B" and "C".

I think (but I could be wrong):

B is for Boeing
C is for Customer (Customer acceptance, functionality, training...)

I suppose the number of test flights are based on the number of problems encountered and/or resolved in the previous test. Dependent on weather they can be resolved and ground tested or resolved and air tested.

All that I have heard is that there is apparently no space in Melbourne to park the 787 for a couple of weeks, so it goes to Cairns for certification.

So, VKD is sitting in Cairns, VKA is based out of Melbourne doing the Bali run, and VKB should be departing Sydney now for the inaugural 787 service to Bali.
