How on earth can QF domestic sustain a fleet of what will (assuming none leave the group) become 16 domestic A330-200s!?!? Surely not all current B767 services can be upguaged to A332??

Let alone how can QF domestic sustain the gap from B738 to A332...

Easy 787's, just a little later than first planned. If you read the article the option to buy them still exists and as others have worked out it is not possible to simply replace 767's with A330's.

I'm always wondering, if Qantas is always whinging about their 'record fuel bill', why are they continually delaying or diverting new fuel efficient aircraft to Jetstar?

Maybe because the capital cost of the new aircraft would be a greater expense than running older less fuel efficient aircraft. Just a thought.

Mick F 23rd August 2012 06:21 PM

And the cycle just continues.....

You can't overcome 'record fuel bills' unless you invest in newer, more efficient aircraft.

At what point do they recognise this?

Alexander.L 23rd August 2012 06:39 PM

When they make record size profit. That will be never since they don't invest.

Ash W 23rd August 2012 07:06 PM

Oh you mean that big profit of $400m odd last year, of which about $100m was compensation from Rolls Royce? That would buy, about 1 and a bit A380's, maybe 3-4 787's or 8 or so 737/A320's.

And Mick it is a fine balance between buying new fuel efficient aircraft to offset higher fuel bills balanced with older aircraft that have been paid for but use more fuel. I would say those in charge of Qantas have the figures to make this comparison and choice.

So I don't understand. QF have 22 767 aircraft at present of which the majority are used for domestic (HNL is the last INT 767 route?). 16 aircraft will be reconfigured. Does this mean 4 aircraft will be sold as QF doesn't need them to maintain current domestic flying? JQ have 16 332 aircraft? The 767 fleet will be all but retired by 2015 and the earliest 789 is arriving in 2016 so QF is either buying another aircraft for domestic, cancelling the international 330 routes or reducing domestic flying? Have I missed something here?

Mick F 23rd August 2012 07:37 PM

But Ash, at what point do you continue to lose money, before just buying new aircraft?

They've been whining about fuel costs for years now. Cure the problem!

Michael Mak 23rd August 2012 07:41 PM

Will QF mainline still have B787 on order after this cancellation? Or will all the 15 787s go to Jetstar instead?
