Wings over Illawarra 2016.

Wings over Illawarra is scheduled for Sat. 30th April, Sun. 1st May.
A good line up this year and I just hope the weather cooperates.

Glad to see this airshow back this year!

Jonathan Verschuuren 8th April 2016 08:54 PM

I had originally planned to go there by train, but I saw that there will be railway works and associated disruption of the schedule. Apparently, you have to take three different trains to get there, which will probably mean crowded trains and a lot of delays. So perhaps this year going by car is a better option, especially if you want to arrive early. Is anyone planning to go there on Sunday from the eastern suburbs? If so, could you give me a ride? I will pay for your petrol and the parking costs! Please leave me a private message if you are interested.
Best wishes,
Jonathan

Forecast is not looking great at this stage, i'm sure the organisers will have everything crossed it will improve. After 2 consecutive weather affected years, surely it couldn't be 3... :(

Tony Chatham 28th April 2016 05:15 PM

Could someone please advise what frequencies will be in use? Thanks in advance.

Greg Hyde 28th April 2016 05:27 PM

Weekend forecast doesn't look great.

SAT Cloudy. Medium (60%) chance of rain, most likely in the morning. Light winds.

SUN Cloudy. Medium (60%) chance of showers, most likely in the morning and afternoon. Winds north to northwesterly 30 to 45 km/h tending west to northwesterly and becoming light during the afternoon.

Have they ever thought of moving somewhere that needs rain.

Tony, 127.3 is the CTAF frequency, no NOTAM as of yet to say otherwise or indicate special arrangements.

David C 28th April 2016 07:36 PM

There is a full Airshow practice tomorrow ( Friday 29th ) between 1300hrs and 1600hrs . The FA18 is due to practice at approx 1415hrs for anyone who may be interested in taking a trip to YWOL . The is a current Notam designating a Danger Area around the aerodrome up to 8500' .

Thanks for the heads up Dave, might see if I can sneak out and have a look, especially considering tomorrow could be the best of the weather sadly.

Apparently the Hornet will be a fly-in fly-out display without landing both days.

Looks like the weather was a bit better on the Sunday Jonathan, and you had the bonus of the C17, Orion and Sabre.

Bob C 5th May 2016 11:54 AM

Great shots Jonathan ; thanks for sharing.

Did you take a list of what aircraft were attending ?

Cheers

Bob

Jonathan Verschuuren 5th May 2016 12:06 PM

Yes, but I am still working on my notes. I will try to post a list later. Do you have a specific question?
Jonathan

Grahame Hutchison 5th May 2016 12:32 PM

The military aircraft attending on the Saturday were :-

Bob C 5th May 2016 02:04 PM

Thanks Grahame ; thanks Jonathan.

Do you have a list of the Roulettes please as I think there may have been at least one new aircraft amongst them - ie A23-006 was last noted with 2 FTS in 2015.

Cheers

Bob

Greg Hyde 5th May 2016 02:41 PM

Bob,

006, 027,053 from the photos above.

The RAAF will rotate aircraft through the Roulettes depending of flight hours and maintenance needs.

I wrote this doco on ADF Aerobatic Teams some years ago for ADF Serials.

http://www.adf-serials.com.au/research/adf-teams.pdf

It might be of interest.

Greg

Jonathan Verschuuren 5th May 2016 04:09 PM

I logged:

A23-006, 027, 037, 046, 051, 052, 064

Jonathan

Bob C 5th May 2016 04:44 PM

Nice shots Nigel and thanks also for sharing.

Got those serials Greg from the photos and thanks for the others Jonathan. That's an interesting article Greg as I remember some of those earlier aerobatic teams very well.

BTW, I was the author for the PC9, BAe Hawk, Blackhawk and Seahawk pages on ADF Serials for several years until I resigned in about 2008 or 2009. Unfortunately, I copped severe criticism over a few matters so I thought, I'll let the "know it alls" take over. They didn't of course so the pages have only been occasionally updated and I have another 7 or 8 years of data that won't be added.

Thanks once again guys.

Terence W 5th May 2016 11:35 PM

Wowsers, how close were you to that F-18 Nigel?!

I went on Sunday. The military aircraft and warbirds were great. The highlights for me were seeing Connie flying, then going on board, and then seeing VH-OJA for the first time. It was awesome being able to walk in, around and under it!!

Had a great time. Thanks for posting the photos guys!

Nigel C 6th May 2016 08:38 AM

The first shot was from the high speed pass and climb out that started the demonstration on Sunday. He was certainly moving! I'm guessing he was at around 750-1000'?

Carl St. Leon 9th May 2016 09:09 AM

Did anybody actually *fly* in to WoI on the Sunday morning?

I had intended to, but was put off by the forecast of moderate to severe turbulence, thunderstorms 5nm off Wollongong, and strengthening winds.

I'm just curious to know what conditions were *actually* like for anyone who gave it a go.

Zac M 9th May 2016 09:41 AM

I was marshalling the GA guys....had a Saratoga come from Warnervale and pilot said it was a really good flight. Only had about 10GAs.....60 were registered

Thanks, Zac - that stat tells me all I need to know!! I clearly wasn't the only nervous Nellie...

Adam P. 9th May 2016 09:13 PM

I wonder why you weren't sleeping at that particular moment eh Nige??

Greg Hyde 20th May 2016 12:10 PM

Timing is everything

Roulettes Grounded

Like all Air Force aircraft, the PC-9/A is subject to regular maintenance and engineering reviews. These engineering reviews have located cracks in the nose-landing–gear folding strut. Consequently, Air Force is assessing the implications of these cracks, so as to ensure the aircraft meet Air Force’s strict safety standards. Therefore, as a precautionary measure, each PC-9/A will undergo an additional engineering review, and remediation repairs, before returning to normal flying activities.
