Canberra Airport Open Day - 26th October 2008

Canberra Airport will hold it's seeminlgy now annual Open Day this Sunday on the 26th October. The Event will be held on the taxiway inbetween November and Papa (The extension of 35) where it was held last year. Aircraft from Qantas (Most likely 767, it was last year and is the largest aircarft flying to Canberra on a regular basis), QantasLink (Most likely Sunstate, -Q400), Virgin Blue (I would say either an E170 or E190) and Brindabella Airlines (I would say a Jetstream 41). There will also be other Aircraft Displays and Airport Equipment displays. A 'Carnival' area will be provided with activites for families, RAAF Hot Air Balloon Display along with Food and Drink. Not only this, it looks as though Airside Tarmac Tours will be held again, using three Deanes Buslines buses at regualr intevals.

Date - 26th October 2008
Time - 9:30 till 2 (Website says 1.30, street side signs say 2)
Parking - Parking is free, Multi Storey Carpark and other Carparks can be found of Brindabella Cct and Molongolo Drive

Aircraft will still be arriving and departing, so you may be able to get some good photos in a different place to the Norm!

If you have a partner that does not want to attend the event, there is a DFO in Fyshwick and Brand Depot at the Airport, Both are an easy drive, and big enough to distract the girls for a few hours ;)

A PDF Map and Information Sheet can be found at http://www.canberraairport.com.au/PDF/openday.pdf

Unfortunately I am no longer going but you can expect VH-OGD there.

Marty H 21st October 2008 06:20 PM

If I can change my shift to a later start I may jet up for a squizz.

Tim Bowrey 21st October 2008 09:49 PM

Thatd be about a 5am wake-up call or so?

Any ideas if there is easy access to the Cabin and flight decks for some pics? And it says "Watch out for the thrilling flying display by a RAAF F/A-18 Hornet
from 11.30am!" Thats be awesome! I guess im asking people who went to the other one last year.

Todd Milton 22nd October 2008 03:43 AM

Yes, Cabins will be open for inspection albeit with a large line! Cockpits are a quick look in, and you may be able to sneak in a photo. The Hornet Display is new, as I cannot remember one from last year.

Steve Jones 22nd October 2008 07:08 AM

Info from an insider:

Quote:

I can confirm QF 767-300, DJ E190, Brindabella J41, Qantaslink Q400 (which will do a joyflight for charity - I think tickets are on sale first come first serve at the open day)

All these aircraft will be open for public walkthrough (some will have cockpit open, not sure which). If last year is anything to go by, expect long queues though!

There will also be about 6-7 smaller GA on static display (Nanchang, Cirrus, Cessna 150, Robinson R44 chopper etc) including the new Canberra resident L39 Albatross jet. Eurocopter will bring down a chopper from Sydney for some joyflights as well.

The RAAF tethered balloon will be on site also doing rides, subject to weather.

A highlight will be a full handling display by a F/A-18 hornet at 1130 sharp. Apparently the display will be similar to what you see at Avalon. It is the final display by the current RAAF display pilot, and following the show, he will land to refuel and (I think) be available to meet the public.

A strong rumour that a Mineralogy MD-82 may be a last minute addition to the aircraft line-up, with the opportunity to see inside the VIP-configured interior! Now that would be cool!

lloyd fox 24th October 2008 07:33 PM

Yes VP-CBI flew Brisbane-Canberra this arvo.

Todd Milton 26th October 2008 12:22 PM

Yes, people were allowed on board the MD-82, however you could not look around the cabin, just look in. You were able to grab photos of the Cockpit only. A very nice aircraft, both inside and out however. Photos to come!

phil.l 26th October 2008 01:43 PM

Will anyone be posting a list of attending aircraft with regos?

That looks a lot like you Todd in the picture of the MD-82.

Stephen Brown 27th October 2008 02:18 PM

Yep was a good morning, except for the swarm of bees that surrounded the crowd where I was just before the F-18 arrived.

I'd be a bit worried about some of the people who were reaching up and touching stuff in the wheel wells of the QF76. They had all the doors open and the crowd seemed to jump the line and go right up and were reaching and touching.....scary stuff.

Photos to follow shortly. I might even be arsed and do a trip report.

Todd, I got some shots of the MD82 cabin as well as the flight deck, didn't they let you??

I've seen the F-18 demo heaps of times, either in a show or practiced over Willytown, and I swear he mucked up yesterday. One of his high Alpha maneuvers nearly looked like it resulted in a stall and he had to push over quick to get out of it. I could be wrong, but at the time I thought at his altitude he was a bit low for what he was trying to do.

But the missed approach and high speed pass was good......

Stuff to follow

Tim Bowrey 27th October 2008 02:55 PM

Hey Stephen i saw you there. You were waiting in-line to go on the MD-82 not far infront of me.

Sunday was Wardie's last show as the RAAF's Hornet display pilot - perhaps he was looking to do something a little bit more speckie?! I think more power is the way out of a high alpha stall rather than a nose over if you're only at 1000'.

The new display pilot, 'Acko', did his first show at Nowra the same afternoon and did well considering it was his first public display.

Stephen Brown 27th October 2008 05:04 PM

Yeah, he did the usual high alpha low air speed pass, but after that he did a pass and went down towards the south of the airfield and he pulled into High G tight turn but then pulled up out of the turn with not much airpseed and the plane seemed to hang on the pull up. i could hear the afterburners kick in but it didn't seem to start climbing. After it started marginally climbing he did a fairly abrupt pushover. Just haven't seen it done like that before.

That'd be the bunt he's been working on in recent shows...there's a sort horizontal version of it after his missed approach too...he kicks the tail around and then pushes it over whilst cranked over at 90 degrees...not too shabby! I think I heard from someone that the new software in the jet has made that move possible...???

Stephen Brown 27th October 2008 05:40 PM

Yeah I was imagining bitching Betty going off during the demo...

Yes, the Bee's swarmed around me aswell!

The MD-82 Captain said 'No photos of the cabin, but feel free to take photos of the Cockpit' and even the Canberra Time's stated no photos were allowed to be taken of the MD-82 interior. I was lucky enough to be able to get in, when I arrived at the aircraft they were saying no before Mr Palmer came down and said that people could have another 30 minutes of tours. That even got a mention in the Canberra Times aswell!
