Collision Averted At Shanghai Hongqiao

A China Eastern A330 had just landed at Shanghai Hongqiao Airport on runway 36R and was taxiing to the terminal and neeeded to cross 33L. It was told to hold short of 36L, but did not.
A China Eastern A320 was accelerating for take off down 36L and was at about 110 KIAS when the crew sighted the A330. The crew assessed that they would not be able to stop in time so continued their take off "firewalling" the throttles and rotated at 130 KIAS clearing the A330.

It has been pointed out on another forum that a similar occurrence happen at Sydney Airport in 1971 when a TAA 727, VH-TJA taking off impacted a Cadanian Pacific DC8 which was backtracking on RWY 16 after just landing.

Have a look at the damage to the 727 at the end of the ATSB report.

The instruction, "Take taxiway right" misinterpreted as "Backtrack if you like" by the CP Air DC8. I remember it well. Luckily the main landing gear wasn't sheared off by the tail of the DC8.
