35 Years Of The Boeing B762

On this day in 1981, the first Boeing B767-200 took to the skies.

The 767 entered service with United Airlines on September 8, 1982, and the aircraft's first commercial flight used a JT9D-powered 767-200 on the Chicago-to-Denver route. The CF6-powered 767-200 commenced service three months later with Delta Air Lines. Upon delivery, early 767s were mainly deployed on domestic routes, including U.S. transcontinental services. American Airlines and TWA began flying the 767-200 in late 1982, while Air Canada, China Airlines, and El Al began operating the aircraft in 1983. The aircraft's introduction was relatively smooth, with few operational glitches and greater dispatch reliability than prior jetliners. In its first year, the 767 logged a 96.1 percent rate of takeoff without delay due to technical issues, which exceeded the industry average for new aircraft.

Flew on VH-EAJ on 28 July 1985 - or maybe 3 August? Naming ceremony anyway, then flight to Brisbane and river cruise. A fun day all round!

Hi Grahame,

Do you have any photos of the ANZ 767 with winglets? Makes it look so much better.

I agree the ANZ 763 looks better with the winglets. The 762 never had winglets though, with any operator.

Wasn't Ansett one of the first overseas launch customers ?
Had to redesigned with a three crew cockpit to placate Union demands.

How times have changed with the introduction of computerisation.

Does anyone know when Qantas got their first 767-200 and when was it retired? Are there any 762's still in active RPT service?

Ken,

More than a couple, More than a few, ....

Also at the time when the QF B762 were introduced, QF was the only all B747 airline in the world.

The B762/3's allowed the removal of the 2 x B747SP especially on the Wellington NZ route
