QF1 Diversion To Larnaca In Cyprus

QF1 is now heading for London Heathrow from Larnaca in Cyprus (35min out), after an unexpected diversion earlier today. They were northeast of Istanbul when the significant diversion to Larnaca, well to the south, took place. I have not seen any reason for the diversion and the aircraft involved if VH-OQL.

Only out of curiosity, why Cyprus? Why not Athens? Am guessing Istanbul was closer but would have required a fuel dump to get below max landing weight, but Athens was a little closer than Cyprus?

Happy to be educated

From The Qantas Source

QANTAS A380 VH-OQL operating the Dubai – London Heathrow sector of QF1 Sydney – Dubai – London Heathrow (depart Sydney 14th December) was to the north of Istanbul this morning when it turned due south and diverted via Larnaca due to a medical emergency on board. The complete routing was therefore Sydney – Dubai – Larnaca – London Heathrow. This was the first visit of a QANTAS A380 to Larnaca.

Given a choice of Athens or Larnaca for medical treatment, Larnaca would win 101 times out of 100.

I was unfortunate enough to suffer a medical emergency in Cyprus requiring surgery a few years ago , the medical care and treatment I received was outstanding and equalled or exceeded my expectations . A good decision in the choice of diversion airports .
