Past airline routes

Discovered this website http://airline-memorabilia.blogspot.com.au/. Unbelievable how many domestic and regional routes within Australia no longer exist. Was especially interested in the old Southern Australia Airlines and TAA regional routes.

Ryan K 16th March 2017 03:01 PM

This is fantastic. It's also crazy to see that in 1992, the flight time MEL-HBA was 65 minutes. This is now 75-80 minutes these days!

Michael R 16th March 2017 03:50 PM

I know Ryan love it. Also can't get over some of those old routes like Brisbane to Maroochydore, Mildura to Renmark/Broken Hill and the list goes on.

Greg Hyde 16th March 2017 04:57 PM

Also have a look at the brochures at the bottom of the page like:

TAA proudly presents the 727 whispering T-Jet (1965)

I would never have believed a Melbourne/Cooma/Merimbula service by Ansett back in the early 90's. Anybody know what equipment TAA were using on the Sydney to Moruya and Merimbula sector back in the day? Just a guess maybe Hazelton in the Saab.

MarkR 16th March 2017 05:39 PM

Hazeltons did the service on behalf of both Ansett and TAA, they used the Shorts 360 in the mid 90s

Michael R 16th March 2017 06:08 PM

Thanks Mark. Great memories looking at that Shorts 360. Working for Qantas now at Sydney I still get excited when I come across equipment form the 80's and early 90's. We still have baggage barrows with TAA and Australian on them.

Ryan K 18th March 2017 11:21 AM

I remember back in 1986 flying OOL-BNE on Ansett before continuing on a direct flight BNE-LST. That flight then continued on to do LST-HBA!

Robert.M 18th March 2017 02:08 PM

Interesting to look at Kendell's routes in the late 1990s and Hazeltons in the early 2000s.

Michael R 18th March 2017 07:54 PM

Ryan K I'm so glad you posted that because I was sure that a service did exist between OOL-BNE just couldn't find anything on it.

Michael R 18th March 2017 08:47 PM

Ryan do you remember what aircraft it was by any chance. I would love to get some info on schedules and frequencies for that route.

Ryan K 19th March 2017 10:05 AM

Yes Michael, it definitely existed in the 1980's. It was on Ansett and went OOL-BNE-LST-HBA, perhaps in school holidays and the summer period....? I remember landing in Launceston and half the passengers got off before the other half continued on through to Hobart. I was only six years of age, but I think it was a 737. I can't remember if it was the -200 series or the newly introduced -300 series. I don't think it was the 727-200.

Peter Lea 19th March 2017 11:04 AM

Hi Michael,

I have a copy of the TAA Timetable effective 17 August 1985 and it shows the following flights.

Mon to Sat - BNE - OOL flt 405 dep 6.15am arr 6.40am, then continues to SYD arriving at 8.10am

Sat - BNE - OOL flt 519 dep 11.15am arr 11.40am, then continues to LST arriving at 2.25pm

Sun - BNE - OOL flt 553 dep 5.30pm arr 5.55pm then continues to MEL arriving at 8.20pm

Reverse flights between OOL and BNE are flt 520 on Saturdays dep 10.20am arr 10.45am originates LST and flt 560 on Friday dep 9.15pm arr 9.40pm originates MEL.

All flights show "JET" so could be both DC9 and B727 aircraft.

Paul S. 19th March 2017 02:35 PM

I flew BNE-OOL on East West with a F27

Michael R 19th March 2017 07:36 PM

Thank you very much Ryan and Peter I appreciate the info very much. Paul was the East West flights around the mid eighties?

Kain C 19th March 2017 07:38 PM

Here's some more routes of this genre in Tasmania from 1993 to 2002

Ansett:

LST-OOL Sat ceased Dec 1993 Jet
LST-BNE Sat Dec 1993 to Jan 1994, Sat Sun Dec 1994 to Jan 1995, ceased Jan 1995 Jet
LST-ADL Sat Sun Dec 1993 to Jan 1994, Sat Dec 1994 to Jan 1995, ceased Jan 1995 Jet

Qantas group:

SYD-LST-HBA Fri, returned HBA-SYD Sat ceased Mar 1994 737
LST-ADL Sat, returned Sun Oct 1996 to Mar 2000 146
HBA-BNE Daily Dec 1998 to Jan 1999, Dec 1999 to Jan 2000 146
HBA-OOL Sat Sun May 2002 to Oct 2002 717

Michael R 19th March 2017 08:00 PM

Decent sector for the 146 HBA - BNE Kain.

Paul S. 20th March 2017 07:36 PM

Hi Michael, East West Flight 148, F27 in the Gold Coast Express livery from BNE-OOL was on 11 January 1984 on VH-EWQ. So yes mid eighties is correct

Another good resource is http://www.timetableimages.com/ttima...mplete.htm#Aus.

I have a AN timetable dated March 1986 at home it has a couple of interesting routes from memory there was SYD-DRW milkrun routing SYD-(BNE?)-TSV-CNS-GOV-DRW. Unfortunately equipment is "Boeing" but I'm guessing 737-200 maybe a 727 for the SYD/TSV if there was no BNE stop.

If I remember correctly at the very end of TN's DC-9 ops they had them on a BNE-ROK-MKY-TSV-CNS run.

I remember flying DRW-ADL on AN in 1994 the full routing was something like DRW-ADL-MEL-SYD-CBR.

*EDIT

It was actually a MEL-SYD-TSV-CNS-GOV-DRW milkrun I was thinking of. AN6 on Monday only. The return made the same stops as AN71 which ran twice weekly on Wed/Thu.

Was looking at the old Eastern Australian Airlines routemap today and noticed that they use to have flights BNE-WGA and OOL-WGA. Can anybody shed any info? Timetable image was 1992.

Michael Cleary 24th March 2017 08:45 PM

East West had some interesting routes in their F-27 days, some short, some extreme range.

SYD-Condobolin-West Wyalong-SYD - I did this about 1971 in an F27 - only about 60 miles from Condo to WW.

Then they started direct flights from SYD-ASP in the late 1970's - 1250 miles in a Fokker was a very long hop - and about 5 hours as well.

Then of course towards the end of the Two Airline Policy days they tested the water by flying Sydney to Melbourne via Albury, which provoked Ansett to do the same, though the latter did not have rights for Albury, so they landed, taxied back and then departed for a while until the farce got sorted out.

Ansett (sadly) fixed them though, bought them out and then eventually swallowed them up. For a while there were some EW liveried 727's flying, mainly to and from the Gold Coast.

From 1993, operated by Link Airways (route map shows Southern Australia) in a Rockwell Commander:

WGA-BNE 0650-0900 M.W.F.. JK604
BNE-WGA 1420-1630 M.W.F.. JK605
WGA-OOL 0800-1000 ......S JK602
OOL-WGA 1230-1430 ......S JK603

Greg McDonald 25th March 2017 09:32 AM

I remember saving up all my money as a kid and flying from Maryborough to Bundaberg on an Ansett F27 and back on a TAA one. My first ever lone flight! Don't even want to think about how many years ago that was....

Michael R 25th March 2017 11:57 AM

Thanks for all the info guy's really love it. It's strange how some things come back around with Jetgo now doing WGA-BNE and some other regional routes that once existed.

Michael R 26th March 2017 02:05 PM

Does anyone have any knowledge of the Tasmanian domestic market. I believe Tasair or Airlines Of Tasmania may have had flights between Hobart/Launceston/Devonport/Burnie.

MarkR 26th March 2017 02:39 PM

Bit of info here on Tassie OPs.

Can anybody shed any light on an airline called MacArthur Airways. Stumbled on them while visiting airline timetable images today. They were doing RPT flights between Camden and Canberra in 1979. The only thing I could find was they were using a DH 104 Dove VH-DHD.

In 1979 I flew Hobart to Wynward (Burnie) on Air Tasmania, Piper Navajo VH-TVD.

Memorable trip as my bag got stuck in the wing storage when I arrived in Burnie.

Whilst looking at the website " airline timetable images " noticed their was once a service between Goulburn and Sydney by Thomas Air Transport Systems. Timetable dated 1981. Wonder how long it lasted and what aircraft they used. They also did Swan Hill to Sydney.

I think you will find that is the airline that John Thomas (Virgin Australia) owned before he went to the USA.

Can anyone remember a time when Impulse airlines served Sydney/Wollongong and Newcastle/Wollongong? Looking at a route map from airline timetable images it shows that these services existed.

Rob R 22nd April 2017 10:34 PM

It was in 1999 and I was an FO with them at the time.

Michael R 24th April 2017 11:06 AM

Thank you Rob. I know it was a while ago but what was the frequency like ?

Michael R 27th October 2017 03:35 PM

Can anyone please tell me what routes Eastern Australia Airlines flew out of Sydney in the Jetstream 32 aircraft?
