Unauthorised Laser Events At YSSY

The YSSY tower just advised aircraft of unauthorised laser events near the airport.

Kind regards,

When you have this level of ignorance as noted in the Sydney Morning Herald Travel section 23 October 2010, it shows the depth of the problem....

Prohibited pointers
We were recently in Bali and enjoyed bartering with vendors on the streets and beaches and
bought a laser pointer for our son. Other members of our group also bought laser pointers for their
children. On our return to Melbourne, our luggage was screened by customs and the laser pointer
was seized. We were advised that they are prohibited imports and I now have a ''mark'' on my
immigration record and further breaches will incur a substantial fine. The same happened to the
other members of our group who bought laser pointers.
We bought them in good faith with no understanding of the seriousness of the crime we
unwittingly committed, so I write this as a warning to others.

To point at car drivers, I had someone point one at me one night last week driving home from work.

What would be classed as an authorised laser event then ?

Jayden Laing 3rd September 2012 11:27 AM

Brad, I would assume astronomer's using the lasers would be classed as an authorized laser event as they have a legit reason them to point them into the sky to point out various stars to fellow astronomers on their meeting/stargazing nights.

Grahame Hutchison 3rd September 2012 01:11 PM

If you go to the Sydney Observatory evening tours, the staff use powerful green lasers to point out the major stars and constellations.

Occasionally the Notams make mention of laser events taking place, such as when public festivals use them for displays etc.
