Can find Xmas Creek on Google , but not the 1100 metre sealed airfield....

David C 13th July 2012 05:57 PM

Qantas won't be operating into a 1100M unsealed strip (CXQ), particularly with a 737 , so it begs the question , where is CKW ?...

Have located details for Christmas Creek on Flightstats... Although it is pretty vague..
http://www.flightstats.com/go/Airpor...irportCode=CXQ

David C 13th July 2012 06:54 PM

That is the airport coded CXQ ... Qantas won't be putting any jets into there .

Skywest have been flying Fokker 100's into there for FMG to service Christmas Creek and Cloudbreak mines.

Andrew P 13th July 2012 07:52 PM

Christmas Creek mine is 60km East of Cloudview Airport in the Pilbara, must be a new airstrip for the Christmas Creek mine

Mark B 14th July 2012 11:41 PM

There was a new airstrip being built at Christmas Creek as part of Fortescue's expansion project there.

I assume that map shows the new strip for CKW and this one shows where Christmas Creek is: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Iron_ore_Pilbara.jpg

This may be the contract announcement, indicating it should have been finished by now:

and, I found someone on LinkedIn who is working on a "CASA Compliant" 2.5Km strip & Terminal for Christmas Creek Mine.

(Off topic, CKX is the code for "Chicken Airport" Alaska. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chicken_Airport )

The Christmas Creek Airport is being built to allow workers to FIFO from there directly instead of FIFO Cloudbreak 60km away and wasting time catching buses over to Christmas Creek. There is also no ILS at Cloudbreak, which has meant diversions to the coast waiting wx, and the Christmas Creek aiport was meant to be getting ILS.

I worked at Christmas Creek for a while and there was alot of angst with wx causing delays getting home after 2 weeks away at work.
