REX Engine Fire

Last night VH-RXX (appropriate) suffered an engine failure/fire whist operating ZL139.

Well done to the crew.

A Regional Express aircraft was forced to make an emergency landing on the NSW South Coast last night after one of the plane's engines reportedly caught fire mid- flight.

Fire and Rescue NSW crews were called to Merimbula Airport about 8.15pm after receiving an emergency call claiming a blaze disabled one of the Saab 340 aircraft's engines.

After originally taking off from Sydney at 6:45pm, the plane landed in Moruya and was on the second leg of the flight to Merimbula when the incident occurred.

The 19 passengers and crew on board Rex flight ZL139 escaped without injury, with the plane safely landing after circling over the ocean for 40 minutes.

Passenger Vicki Hodges described the emergency as "the most terrifying experience of my life".

"Engine blew up just out of Moruya so flew 40 minutes on one engine. The wonderful pilots got us home safely," she wrote on social media after the emergency landing.

Strange to read that they "circled for 40 minutes" .... i would have assumed an engine failure and even more so, an engine fire would require an emergency landing as soon as able.

They would have needed time to get services insitu at the destination.

The flight from Moruya to Merimbula is normally 20/21 minutes and according to Flightaware it took 46 minutes on Thursday night, so it looks as though the actual holding was more like 25 minutes while emergency services were mobilised.

They circled over the ocean so they may of been burning off fuel

Greg, not a landing weight/fuel burning issue when it's a 20 min flight. They'd normally not refuel that service anywhere but Sydney. Just running checklists, preparing the cabin and letting the emergency services (all off airport) get ready. If the fire indications went out when the engine was secured it's no great rush.

ATSB Investigation for ADL incident

During taxi, the outer wheel on the left main landing gear fractured, with a piece of the wheel rim being left on the apron at Adelaide. After landing at Port Lincoln, the crew observed that the left outer tyre had deflated and detected the wheel damage.
