It's not on the Melbourne airport arrivals page.

It's a cargo only flight, that is why it doesn't show on Melbourne Airport site. It operates every Monday, Departs Tuesday to Auckland.

9V-SKQ is currently inbound to Sydney as SQ8896.

I have no idea why they are moving their A380 from Alice Springs. Maybe to longer term storage?

James Smith 22nd February 2021 12:40 PM

Interesting Alex as SQ8896 has flown from SIN to ASP arriving this morning and operated by A380 9V-SKL. SQ8896, but operated now by 9V-SKQ, has 2 hour 20 minute later departed ASP to SYD but is cruising at 22,000 feet with a speed of 330 to 350 knots. I presume that the same crew have flown both flights.

So, that adds to the mystery. Possibly Singapore Airlines have swapped over a stored A380 and have moved SKQ to SYD as the closest port to enable maintenance to be undertaken before it is flown to SIN. It is possibly a pressurisation issue or could be flying on three engines, amongst other things.

SKQ overflew my place near Picton with its undercarriage down. , very unusual .

It’s getting a new cabin:

Quote:

A Singapore Airlines A380 left the Alice Springs ‘boneyard’ on Monday morning to be fitted with a new cabin allowing it to eventually return to service, Australian Aviation can reveal.

The Airbus A380-841, 9V-SKQ msn 079, departed Alice Springs at 10:03 AM and as flight SQ8896 and landed in Sydney at 3:07 PM, where it will undergo checks following it being ‘thawed out’ from its spell in the desert.

The carrier, the launch customer for the double-decker, is set to retire seven of its A380 but crucially keep 12 in service.

They would’ve flown all the way from ASP to SYD with the gear down. Hence the altitude and speed that James mentioned in another post. Not cycling the landing gear on a sector means they haven’t put a cycle on it and significantly reduces maintenance costs. Especially when the jet is in long term storage!

QF also ferried their A332 from AVV to SYD with the gear down for the same reason

Max C 23rd February 2021 09:38 PM

I believe the aircraft require a gear swing on jacks in the hangar, that’s why they ferry gear down. SYD have the facilities to do that. AVV and ASP don’t.

Adding 1 cycle is an insignificant cost over the life of an aircraft.
