Sorry to hear OJN is for sale. It is my sentimental favourite, probably because it was the first 744 i ever flew on. Does anyone know any more details i.e. how long she will be around for, whether she will be withdrawn from service soon or remain in the fleet but still for sale?

I thought i read somewhere that OJG, OJH and OJJ were being lined up for sale from sometime later next year, so this is a surprise. Pardon my ignorance, but can anyone shed any light on how they determine in what order they are going to retire these 744s? I know it must have something to do with the aircraft's flying hours but the part that i don't get is that at least one of the already retired 744s (OJR) was one of the later OJ series aircraft. I would have thought its hours would have been less than something like OJB, which is older.

Any info on this topic would be greatly appreciated.

Number of cycles play a big factor also. In OJRs chase I think it was on some sort of lease and it costed more then the other 747s so then it was decided to have it retired from the fleet when the lease was up.

Many factors, including cycles, where it is in relation to future maintenance, ie if it is coming up for a costly check it may go before an older aircraft that has had that check, and of course the terms under which the aircraft is financed. Noting most Qantas 747's are leased in some way shape or form, through a mixture of Qantas owned companies and other companies that Qantas has sold the a/c too and leased back.

Thanks all for the info so far. It explains a little of why some of the newer ones may go first. I read today that OJR is being broken up for parts :(
To good an aircraft for that!!

Any more info on OJN that comes to hand, i would appreciate it being passed on.

Many Thanks,
Jim M

Sadly I think there may be a number of 744s heading for breakup. The freighter conversions are not happening because freight is still in the doldrums, while there isn't much of a secondary operator's market as there was for the 742s - ie charter carriers and some of the second and third world carriers. Now that Dreamliners are starting to be delivered, there will be a lot of pressure on their values, so it's likely that most owners will break them up for the value of their parts rather than invest in keeping them airworthy.

Hi All,

Just wondering whether there has been any further info about this lady.
There doesn't appear to have been too much activity from her since arriving on QF2 on the 11/12 unless i have missed something?

Any info would be appreciated and thanks in advance,

Jim M

That is the first time I've seen VH-OJB and VH-OJP listed. Interesting to see OJB for sale considering it's configuration.

I notice OJA has not made an appearance yet
