Work on second Brisbane Airport runway to begin this year

Quote:

Work to build Brisbane Airport's second runway will begin after July this year, with the $1.3 billion project expected to be completed in seven years time.

Construction on the runway, which was approved in 2007, has been delayed when passengers numbers dipped during the Global Financial Crisis.

The economic turn-around has enabled financing for the project.

Good news for Brisbane Airport.
How will the news be taken by the residents that has been lobbying for years to not have this runway created due to noise concerns? :D

I'm almost reading two things here I think. Do they mean improvements to the smaller runway(as per title) or building a 3rd runway at BNE to run adjacent?(As per story). The story should read 'building Brisbanes third runway' I'm guessing?

They are talking about the duplication of the main 01/19 runway, technically since 14/32 will be decomissioned shortly, this will be our second runway...

I heard that the current Federal Member for Griffith isn't a big fan for the project?

Runway 14/32 will close for 2 years soon, to be made into a taxyway joining both the old runway 01/19 and the future new 01L/19R ,however it will reopen as a runway after the 2 year closure and stay open till the new 01L/19R opens.

For the 2 years it is closed only one runway will be operational.BNE is already experiencing 650 movements on the busiest days, and possibly 700 by the end of this year, so the sooner they start on the work the better.

So in 2020 only 01L/19R and 01R/19L will be in operation.

It's becoming quite frustrating at times with the amount of holding required for peak arrivals. I was lucky last night and we only had 10 minutes, but previously it's not uncommon to have 30+ minutes of holding in to Brisbane.

It should be fast tracked the new runway as they need it now!!!
