Unusual departure EY451 27/8.

Hey All, Any info why EY451 departed with a tight left and right turn out of Sydney today? Seems very unusual?

It is a bit odd, unless there was a conflict to the north not showing that meant she had to turn left, and then got caught in a conflict with JQ4 arriving into the pattern.

From The ATC Archive

There appears to have been a miscommunication after takeoff between ATC and Etihad 451.

The Radio Transmissions go something like this :-

ATC: Turn right heading 275

ATC: Etihad 451 departures, turn right heading 310

EY451: Heading 310, Etihad 451

ATC: Etihad 451, that manoeuvre you did on departure, completely unexpected, are operations normal ?

EY451: Etihad 451, We received an instruction to turn left heading 100, and there was a read back.

ATC: Etihad 451, the heading 100 was given to another aircraft on departure from 16L, so if you had been transmitting
at the same time as me, you might have heard the last transmission of that aircraft, or if you had of over transmitted
me, that might be the issue if you heard a heading of 100 somewhere.

EY451: Etihad 451, copy that, ok I suppose we heard someone ........ ("Can't make out the last words")

ATC: Etihad 451, turn left, track to KADOM

EY451: Direct KADOM, Etihad 451

I presume there will be an investigation to see what actually happened.

Here is a more complete, and slightly corrected transcript, of the transmissions between ATC and Etihad 451. ATC Departures East appear to have given Jetstar 826 (SODOPS off Runway 16L) a heading of 100 at the same time as Etihad had just changed to the Departures frequency. It is interesting that Etihad would not have asked for confirmation of that instruction, as left heading 100 would have taken them back over the centreline of the Runway they departed from, which would have been a completely unusual departure track that close to the airport (and Etihad were departing to the west). Also unusual is that the instruction to JQ826 would have been on the Departures North and East frequency of 123.0, and not 129.7 that Etihad should have been on.

It's a little difficult to create a full transcript, as the LiveATC recording has multiple frequencies on the same feed, and you do not always hear every transmission from all frequencies.

Here is
Ethiad 451s departure track yesterday afternoon, created from the data from two of my Sydney ADS-B ground Stations. A heading of 100 would have taken them
roughly back over the Runway 34L threshold.

Thanks for the info Grahame.

Was bizarre seeing the 777 blasting out in the near distance from my place at Glenfield. Thought it was a heavy 25 departure.

Certainly a major f*** up by the pilots in command yesterday afternoon!

I wouldn't be to quick to blame the pilots, they thought they were following an instruction, which yes they misheard, however the controller seems to have taken some time to notice their error, which shouldn't happen.

Great work guys. I live near Chipping Norton Lake and heard ETD451 as she passed overhead low and loud. I recognised that this was unusual, and had a look immediately on Flighradar24 thinking that Rwy25 was open for departures.

Looking at the flightpath on Flighradar24 I put it down to a glitch on Fr24's part. As It was very apparent that this was unusual, with the sound of the T7 still loud and clear. I only had time for a quick check on LiveATC, but I heard nothing unusual. By then the immediate comms with relation to the incident had finished.

I was hoping that someone else had picked up on this, and yet again, you folks came through. Thanks very much gentleman. 😎

Andrew.
