Strange Syd Today

hi i was at stgeorge rowers at lunch when we saw this small aircraft similar to the aeropelican doing flybys looks like it was coming to land but then would bank right over the terminals and loop around again..

must have done this about 15 times

any ideas???

It was a Beechcraft 200 , flight number ADA 01 as shown on Webtrak at around 1330 Hrs . It appears to be doing either practice ILS approaches on to RW 16R or calibration work , hence the go arounds .. hope this helps .

thanks there was just a few curios people on the balcony wondering what it was doing and making sure it wasnt the beer playing tricks on our eyes

Syd ATIS showed earlier in the day that ILS 16R wasn't available due testing so i would think that this was the aircraft conducting the tests.

Time gone by, the old Department of transport used to have an F28 with calibration equipment which used to do the same thing and it was real fun watching it conduct the ILS approach then break off at the last minute and climb out like a bat out of hell!

If I remember correctly there are a number of threads on this forum with details of exactly this subject.

it went over Pymble at about noon heading in the direction of YSSY, the different sound of its engine made me look up

Just on a slightly different note: I saw a DJ 737 takeoff on 25 at around 9.20am and climb to 5000ft. When it passed near Chipping Norton, a SQ 773 passed 311m directly above it according to webtrak; that's just over 1000ft, but still cutting it quite fine. It was interesting to look at from my angle - they looked much closer. :P

1,000ft separation is normal.

In Sydney departures are cleared to 5,000ft whilst arrival descend to 6,000ft as a standard. Director then clears arrivals lower once clear of outbound traffic.

Yeah i know it's normal, ive just never seen two aircraft so close in Sydney, and where i saw it from it appeared closer is all.

VH-FII would be the one you saw I'd say. Is this it?...
