Five Holsworthy Black Hawks forced to land

Five Black Hawk helicopters from the Holsworthy-based 6th Aviation Regiment were forced to make precautionary landings in parklands in Sydney and the Central Coast region last week due to bad weather.
On the Central Coast, one Black Hawk landed at Toukley Sports Field in Canton Beach and three landed in Frazer Park.

“The rain and low cloud that was closing in on the aircraft would have made it difficult to safely continue the training mission,” Commander of the 16th Aviation Brigade, Brigadier Gregory Lawler said.

“With safety being the highest priority, the crew of the helicopters decided the most prudent action was to land the aircraft and recover them once the weather improved later today.

“The crew followed what is standard operating procedure to ensure their own safety, and the safety of their passengers.”

The Black Hawks landed safely with no damage to any of the aircraft and there were no injuries to any of the crew, passengers or people on the ground.

In a separate incident, a Black Hawk made a precautionary landing on the same day in Thornleigh.

The helicopter was on a training flight when a warning light in the cabin was lit.

The crew followed standard operating procedures, and safely landed the Black Hawk at Headen Park.

A maintenance team was dispatched to investigate the cause of the warning light.

All Black Hawks were participating in a training activity at Singleton at the time.
