Aircraft parking at T1 is driven by a set of guidelines agreed to by the airlines and managed for them by SACL. Generally, all airlines operate from a 'preferred' pier, either B (bays 8-37) or C (50 - 63). The other option is to be bussed.

Assuming flights are on time, priority is given to turnaround aircraft with a ground time of less than 90 mins, then departing flights, then arrivals. So for example if EK is transitting to AKL and UA is remaining in SYD with only 1 bay left on the preferred pier, EK will get it. Off schedule flights have no priority.

Of course, you then have to factor in aircraft type (380 / 346 / 77W etc) because not all aircraft fit on all gates. Then there is the security issues which require flights to the USA operated by QF/UA and HA to operate from gates where passengers can be separated from other travellers.

Add in the fact that the place is at capacity most mornings, and it can add up to a lot of fun at times.

T2 is mostly allocated based on agreements between QF and DJ, while T3 is left to QF to manage.
