A security officer and an alleged robber have been killed during an airport shootout in Chile's capital, in what was believed to be an attempted heist of more than $US32 million ($48 million) in cash aboard a plane from Miami.

Key points:

Around 10 heavily armed robbers entered Arturo Merino Benítez International Airport
The Latam plane arrived from Miami carrying $US32.5 million
An employee of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation and an alleged assailant died in the shootout
About 10 heavily armed robbers entered Arturo Merino Benítez International Airport in three vehicles after tying up a security guard, Deputy Interior Minister Manuel Monsalve said.

"There was an intense exchange of gunfire," Mr Monsalve said.

Security officials "foiled a robbery by a highly organised, highly armed and probably very well-planned [group]," he said.
