A question that I've really thought of but of which has come to mind lately due to one operating on a regular basis near my work is, do helicopters file a flight plan ?

Depends on the circumstances of the flight. Ie. will it be operating in controlled airspace, is it company policy to submit a plan for all flights, category (IFR or VFR).

In most circumstances they would/should. Otherwise sometimes the delays that can be inflicted by ATC when they're required to submit the plan for them, can be painful!
