TWO spectacular forces of nature produced an incredible brew in the skies of Chile yesterday as a volcanic eruption met a lightning storm.

Tonnes of dust and ash from the eruption of the Chaiten volcano poured into the night sky just as an electric storm was passing overhead.

The resulting collision created an extraordinary sight as lightning flickered around the dust cloud in the fiery, orange glow of the volcano.

When I saw this photo yesterday, I have to say it struck me as one of the best photos I have seen in a long time. Awesome stuff! I would also be interested in a larger version!

A few years ago I was speaking with a person who was in Rabaul in 1994 when two Volcanos there went up at the same time (taking out the Airport too). He spoke of being camped out (they simply evacuated to a safe distance when the word got out that it was about to go up) with a few thousand others about 15Km away for a few days. It wasnt funny at the time, but when we spoke a decade later, he described it as a "New Years Eve fireworks display combined with a Thunderstorm that went on all night".
