Default QF568 diversion

Last night's QF568 from Perth to Sydney was diverted to Melbourne to a loss of cabin pressure. SMH link

Flightaware shows descent rates in excess of 4500fpm from 39000' before stabilising at 9900', with later cruise at 17000'. QF568's planned flightpath was much further north than most PER/SYD flights (passing north of Forrest and overflying Coober Pedy and Leigh Creek), with the rapid descent occurring very close to the WA/SA border. Flightaware link

Interestingly, the incoming flight (QF653 from Melbourne to Perth) also planned an inland flight (passing north of Forrest). Flightaware link

There's a pretty vigorous cold front moving through Victoria today, so perhaps that's the reasoning for the northerly track.
