Sure is. The skid marks on the runway lasted probably 7 or 8 years, which was a chilling reminder on just how close we came to 'the big one'.

I also have a vague memory of an over run on runway 25. I have an inkling it was a 707 and for some reason Lufthansa springs to mind...could all be an entirely invented memory. Amazing that railway tracks use to cross the airport let alone be operative!!

Many years ago when the tracks crossed the airport a DC3 and a train had a bit of an altercation one day.It is amazing at some of the stories the old timers used to tell .

That report about the PA 747 was an interesting read. Nice couple of photos too. I guess she wasn't far off going into the cooks river!

There have also been some close ones involving SIMOPS (when it was used at SYD) and aircraft crossing runways.

Or smashing into the main Sydney southern sewer line. Would have caused a real blockage.
