Default Sydney Airport Operations

How many International gates are there at Sydney airport and how many are dedicated to A380 only operations ?

And do all QF International flights depart from one section of the terminal or are they spread around various fingers ?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Bob, there are no A380 only gates, and pier b is for Qantas and one world while pier C is for star and others.

Thanks Mark.

I found some other charts and counted about 27 gates but I may have missed a few. So can A380s use any gates ?

And thanks for the info re QF and OneWorld using Pier B which makes sense to me. Also the other Alliances and unaligned airlines using Pier C is also efficient.

FWIW, I counted 71 International arrivals (excluding freighters) on Saturday, 15 October, compared with only 38 on 7 January so arrivals have nearly doubled but still a long way to go to the 105 I counted on 13 May 2018.

There will be times youíll see the airlines mixed up, e.g. there was a Thai 777 on bay 24 or 25 a couple of weeks ago. Usually the split holds, though.

A380s canít park on every bay, but the A380-capable bays can and do have other aircraft use them between A380s, e.g. many afternoons thereíll be B787s on some or all of bays 8, 9 and 10 which are A380-capable bays.

Hi Bob,

In addition to Bays 8, 9 and 10 being A380 capable, Bays 24, 57 and 61 are also A380 capable. Bays 11 and 12 are only narrow bodied aircraft stand off bays (Bay 11 up to B763) and Bays 55 and 63 are also only for narrow bodied aircraft, but with an aerobridge.

On the close up chart, on the International Cargo apron are Bays 1 to 6. It is quiet common for passenger flights to arrive, depart and park on some of these bays, particularly in the morning peak period when there is less demand from cargo flights. Also, Bays 83, 84 and 85 on the eastern side of runway 16R at the northern end have been known to be used if some flights arrive early and departing flights depart late, to save waiting on the taxiways causing congestion. Passengers are then bused to and from the terminal in these scenarios.

Bays 71 to 77 on the apron across runway 07-25 are used for longer term parking of aircraft which are not being turned around straight away. There are also the Kilo longer term parking bays near the tower on the other side of runway 16R south of 07-25.

There are a total of 25 international aerobridge bays from my count.

I hope that this helps. Do you monitor SYD traffic using Grahame Hutchison's excellent 16Right ADSB? This shows the bays numbered when you zoom in on the international terminal.

Thanks for your reply.

Yes, I've been using Grahame's ADSB logs and excellent site for years now and we also correspond regularly by email about all sorts of aviation matters. Grahame has also escorted me around the airport for photography sessions.

I've long been fascinated by aircraft scheduling but don't understand how they're compiled and that interest has extended to the allocation of parking bays at major airports.

I recall on a visit to Sydney in 2015 that 4-6 of the morning "heavy" arrivals were parked opposite 07-25 and smaller aircraft parked elsewhere to free up gates and were were later towed back to the terminal to be prepared for departure.
