Sounds like someones after (long) lunch hallucinations.
T1 for Virgin and Partners. T2/T3 for Qantas and Partners. So where do the 'non-aligned' Airlines (ie - Delta, China Airlines, Korean and all the rest not in Star or Oneworld) go - down to the GA apron perhaps? Someone said knock it all down and start again - good idea. Its a shambles now, particularly the Domestic side. And yes, its easy to see who pays, the Passengers (through increased taxes) and those with a car (when does the Toll for using the GHD tunnel start, they missed that!!). And what really gives me the runs is having to navigate through an Overpriced ripoff shop (aka Duty Free) when coming or going. I once saw a Chinese girl line up at the Checkout at the inbound Duty free and present her passport!!! End of Rant. |

Carriers that fall out of the Virgin/QF grouping will go to either precinct. Original SYD material said T1/Virgin but now SYD says it will all be common user and they can allocate non-aligned carriers to the QF precinct too. For more, see: http://www.centreforaviation.com/ana...carriers-64068
DL will go to T1/Virgin since it is a Virgin partner. Note that Star carriers do not automatically go to the Virgin terminal. ANZ and SIA will, but TG and UA are up for discussion. Asiana would likely go to QF since it is a QF partner. Even if you knocked down the terminals you would be left with still not enough room to put everything under one roof. Unless you reconstructed the runways two precincts are the way to go. |

Sadly, knocking it all down is not feasible.
Given the real estate constraints, they would be better keeping the International and Domestic separate like now, but there needs to be improvement on links between the two. Something like an underground people mover...like the one at Zurich, or even the one below the Concourse at Hong Kong - departures every 2 minutes or so and without charge to the passengers. Then sort out the Road traffic arrangements in the Domestic area. |

Currently Virgin Australia uses the following number of bays for domestic operations (BNE, MEL and SYD).
BNE: 11 MEL: 13 SYD: 9 (10 if you include 52, 54 or 56 which are used from time to time). SYD will expand to 14 (all narrow body) or 11 (with wide bodies) at the completion of the current works. In my time at Virgin delays due to bay issues would be 5 mins or less in BNE, 10 mins or less in MEL and SYD 15 - 45 mins. SYD has the most flights and the least amount of bays. A move to T1 would require the use of all the bays on the western pier plus the proposed 4 extra bays to cover the current Virgin domestic movements, there is no way that pier could do both domestic and international ops now or in 2019. Besides the issue of need to cross 2 runways when 34 is in use for 75% of the domestic movements (BNE, MEL and OOL required to use 34R due NAP), there would be a need to construct further taxiways from 'A' to 16R to allow intersection departures. Currently on the Eastern side ATC have the choice of 6 holding points they can send jets to. The Western side currently has 3. |
