OQI departed SYD for Dresden this evening , non stop and estimated at 19hrs . Probably the longest duration flight ever for a A380 . I assume it’s the next one for the refurb , or is it for storage ?

Aus Aviation are saying the A380s will be parked in SYD

Quote:
Qantas and Jetstar have pulled roughly 150 aircraft from service, which will be spread between short-term storage facilities located at airports in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth, and Australia’s only long-term facility in Alice Springs.

Around 50 of the planes are set for Victoria’s Avalon Airport, with another 24 parking up at Sydney (including most of Qantas’ 12-strong fleet of A380s).

Qantas will relocate about a team of 30 engineers to Avalon this week to maintain the aircraft during grounding.

QANTAS Source is saying that OQI is going to DRS for maintenance, which probably means refurbishment. Possibly OQI will replace OQG which left SYD on 1/2/20. The refurbishments have been taking approximately two months to perform, so the timing is good and the tech crew will be able to fly OQG back to SYD, as the transfer via LHR is no longer possible.

OQI operating as QF6017 landed in DRS after a 19 hour 14 minute flight non-stop from SYD.

QF 1/2 will be operating via DRW instead of SIN for its final few services.

Can't help but wonder whether the global turmoil courtesy of Covid-19 and the impact it is having on global aviation will force Qantas' hand on the A380 - refurbish all 12 or curtail that program at 6-8, flog the remainder off/leaseback and await the delivery of smaller planes - more 787's, the 350's and some of the 321NEOS ! ! ! !

Can't see the demand for major travel picking up much ahead of year-end at best.

I believe there is a stop on 5 Cabin refresh, and at this stage only Syd-LHR and SYD Lax will see A380 services
