I'd say more likely that they wanted the aircraft in SYD because more of the pax were for SYD than BNE, therefore less re-books. Just an assumption.

Perhaps it was seen that the time normally used in the Brisbane stopover would be enough to fix the problem in Sydney and keep the aircraft in service for its next scheduled leg?

Sydney is actually the main maintenance base for the A380 A330 747 and 767 fleet. Heavy maintenance for the A330's and 767's is in BNE.

The Mascot Jetbase is referred to as Base Maintenance and the domestic and international terminals are referred to as Line Maintenance.

International line maintenance tended to this aircraft.
