Default Spotting near Santos Dumont Airport (Rio)

Was in Rio for the Paralympics and had the chance to do some brief spotting while waiting for the sailing near Santos Dumont Airport (domestic airport in Rio).

Also was interesting to watch the aircraft fly around Sugarloaf Mountain and line up with the runway.

Not a bad location for some photography Robert (plus some different operators and liveries), and it brought back some good memories of Rio back in February 2006.

Here is a shot of the Domestic Airport from the top of Sugarloaf Mountain

The cable car to the top of Sugarloaf Mountain

Copacabana Beach looking towards Sugarloaf - the large tents on the beach were for a free Rolling Stones concert which was attanded by over a million people. The stage was being built behind the tents.

The Corcovado - very impressive

A TAM flight tracking past the Corcovado at roughly the same height for the domestic airport

The escalator at the Corcovado descended into the clouds - an amazing sight

Something for aircraft to watch out for during their approach

Nice shots Robert

The last two give an interesting perspective.

How far where the aircraft away from the mountain ?

Not bad at all, good location for a afternoon nap as well. Didn't get the chance to do much touristy stuff but maybe next time.

To be honest, no idea but would be rather close.

I would happily recommend a helicopter flight around Rio, we caught a flight from Aeroporto de Jacarepaguá, in the Barra da Tijuca area.

After flying down the coast and circling Christ the Redeemer we headed out towards the Contemporary museum and then flew in from the bay and crossed the middle of Santos Dumont Airport runway at a perpendicular angle, then headed to the Maracanã stadium and the forest.
