Default QANTAS looking at the 787-8I AND 777 (BUT)

747-8 (NOT I)
According to flighglobal... (Will H)

Quote:
Qantas is mulling a plan to lease Boeing 747-8 or 777-200LR freighters, according to sources familiar with the matter.

The lease would likely be for a single-digit number of aircraft and will be announced in the coming months. It is unlikely to signal interest in passenger variants of the two aircraft.

The carrier is understood not to be interested in the Airbus A330-200 freighter.

"We are always looking at potential fleet options," a Qantas spokesman says, declining to comment further.

Qantas currently wet-leases three 747-400 freighter aircraft from Atlas Air, from whom it could call on for additional capacity.

"We have placed our first three deliveries with British Airways and are in talks with a number of additional existing and potential new customers regarding these attractive, next-generation freighters," an Atlas Air spokeswoman says. "We have received a great deal of interest in these game-changing aircraft from these parties, and we look forward to announcing the placement of aircraft with them at the appropriate time."

Qantas has seen strong freight volumes and yields, particularly on the carrier's five-weekly service between China and the United States.
Anyone see this coming at all??

Absolutely.

Even Qantas wouldn't create a new livery and ramp up an operation for one 767. Starting the 767 operation replaced an existing contractor - it isn't too much of a stretch to think they would consider replacing their other contractors if the conditions were suitable.

I would be very excited by it, even if it is only freighters.

Having one model in the fleet would definently help the case for passenger ones in the long term future.

Amen!

It looks sooooooo bad.

I'm pretty sure we all know a cargo aircraft when we see one.
See exhibit 1 below. Definitely a cargo plane. Why? Maybe because it has FREIGHT written after the Qantas bit.

Exhibit 2. Not a cargo plane.

Would a kangaroo really make a difference to distinguish between divisions of an airline???

Personally, i would keep the roo.

As has been discussed before, it may be flying for Qantas (just like Atlas do), but it's not a Qantas plane (they're just the registered operator), therefore no Roo.

This whole thing confuses me.

Why stick a huge Qantas logo on a plane without a roo when it isn't owned by qantas in the first place??

So that'd make it one these little "shelf companies" that Qantas now has dotted over the globe everywhere but Australia?

So tell me, is a JetConnect flight a Qantas flight? Is it a Qantas aircraft or is it a JetConnect aircraft? Is it a Qantas pilot or a JetConnect pilot?

Mick
