Default QF1935 Returns To Darwin - Hydraulic Fault

The Australian ...

Quote:
QANTAS flight en route to Alice Springs with 115 passengers is returning to Darwin after a fault was discovered.
The pilot of flight QF1935 that left Darwin at 7.25am (CST) today decided to return as a safety measure, a Qantas spokeswoman said.
She said that while en route to Alice Springs the pilot realised there was a gear indication fault.
"It is a hydraulic fault and it is returning to Darwin," she said.
"There is no safety risk whatsoever ... it is a mechanical issue," she said.
Recently Qantas has announced a cut in flight numbers because union action was causing a backlog in maintenance of its fleet.
The airline said the current problem with its plane was unrelated to the industrial action.

Is this a B717? If it is, then it has nothing to do with any engineering strikes, because the aircraft isn't maintained by QF!

Why let the facts get in the way of a good story?

Question Landing gear fault

I'm puzzled at reports that the fault was detected 30 mins into the flight - surely you'd notice long before then that the landing gear had not retracted?

Or did it take 30 mins to dump fuel and return, which sounds a bit more likely?

Can't dump fuel from 717's so there s a good chance they held for a bit to complete the QRH checklist and lower the landing weight.
