Default Delays as Regional Express pilots stop work after failed Fair Work Commission bid

Quote:
Two flights have been cancelled and there are delays across parts of the Regional Express network, as pilots at the airline take industrial action.

A Fair Work Commission hearing on Friday night failed to resolve the dispute, which was prompted by pilots' concerns that they were being forced to spend too many nights away from home.

Following a four-hour stoppage on Friday morning, staff taking part said they would refuse to fly aircraft with deferred maintenance, which the pilots' union said represented virtually all aeroplanes.

James Lauchland from the Australian Federation of Air Pilots said he expected widespread participation by pilots at Regional Express, also known as Rex.

"We have over 200 members at Rex," he said. "We're expecting a strong showing."

Two flights have been cancelled, a return flight from Adelaide to Mount Gambier and one from Adelaide to Kingscote, with all passengers moved onto other services.

In NSW, flights have been delayed between Sydney and Orange, Albury, Armidale, the state's north coast, Bathurst, Newcastle, Parkes and Broken Hill.

South Australian flights have been held up at Port Lincoln, Whyalla, Kingscote and Mount Gambier, and the route between Melbourne and Merimbula has also been affected.

In Queensland, there are delays on the routes from Brisbane and Townsville to Mt Isa.

A spokeswoman for the airline said passengers whose flights had been disrupted had been given the option of a refund or a change at no cost.

The afternoon's flights are expected to be on schedule.

The spokeswoman said passengers whose flights were affected by the industrial action would be contacted directly.

Mr Lauchland said the industrial action was a last resort.

"We really hoped it wouldn't come to this," he said.

"Unfortunately with Rex rejecting our reasonable proposal and responding aggressively to our earlier conservative forms of industrial action, we've run out of options."

The airline has been contacted for further information about the dispute.

That's part of the problem, Greg. There aren't enough pilots trained up in Perth (and recruiting them on Rex wages has been difficult) so MEL/ADL/SYD pilots have to position to PER for a few days and operate intra-WA. Same for the TSV runs. These pilots joined a regional so they'd be home (almost) every night.
