Air Mauritius to suspend routes in network revamp

Air Mauritius has announced a major restructure of its business model, including a "reconfiguration of the company's network for the next five years".

The changes will see its flights from Mauritius to Sydney and Melbourne cease operating from the end of May this year, along with MK's Milan route, and from the end of Oct Air Mauritius will also withdraw from Frankfurt, Geneva, Munich, Bangalore and Durban.

The carrier will "reinforce" capacity to other destinations including Perth, Paris, London, Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Johannesburg, Cape Town, Nairobi, St Denis, St Pierre, Rodrigues and Antananarivo.

Under the revamp the final Sydney and Melbourne flights will operate 29/30 May, while Perth will gain an additional frequency from 05/06 June.

The carrier reported a quarterly loss of €3.2m, with the result severely impacted by high fuel prices as well as lower demand for 'Destination Mauritius' from its core markets in Europe.

Other changes to be implemented include "an ambitious but realistic cost savings plan" and "a new boost to revenues," with acting ceo Andre Viljoen saying that "the loss-making routes which will be suspended are going to be served through hubs, in collaboration with our airline partners"..
