Default 787 Delay Threatens Qantas Cost and Emission Cuts

LONG-TERM Qantas moves to reduce costs and cut carbon emissions may be under threat.

This is because of predictions that Boeing's 787 delivery schedule to 2012 will be drastically cut.

Boeing confirmed this week that the troubled aircraft would not fly until next year after a 58-day strike stopped production and it discovered about 3 per cent of the fasteners in the first four planes were incorrectly installed.

The US aerospace giant's announcements came as Jetstar said its first deliveries could be up to six months late and may not arrive until May 2010.

The immediate problems may have some advantages for Qantas as it cuts capacity in the current economic crisis, but longer running delays will limit its ability to reduce costs through fleet replacement.

A report by respected US analysts Bernstein Research backs up predictions from Jetstar and US sources that there will be no Dreamliners delivered next year.

I recoknd if Qantas desperately needs new and low emission planes like the 787s, they should reduce their 787 order now and try to order A330 and A350 instead, as their fall of market share is quite threatening and still they don't have any new air buses to come, they would just result in declining and declining market share.

Not sure what the backlog for A330 is like but if they decide to order A350, they won't be getting the planes anytime soon.

Are you saying that QF are losing share becuase they don't have enough Aircraft?

shortage of aircraft is not the problem, they have been losing market share for years now and have had ample time to rectify and market share loss, they to focusing on yield than anything else. For example, the middle East carrier market share of total international traffic is near 15% and Qantas have none of it, they are not even interested.
