Three 789 are to be delivered to QANTAS in the October/November, 2019 period. Following the QANTAS announcement of 789 services to SFO from December, 2019 it looks as though the third aircraft will be used to resume daily MEL to HKG services from 4 November, 2019.

However, a 789 will become available for daily services when QF 127/128 resumes operations with A380s from 4 December, 2019 to 28 March, 2020. I can't see where this aircraft will be redeployed to at this stage. Maybe domestic services?

The remaining QANTAS B744 routes when HNL returns to being operated by A330s and SFO is flown by B789s are SYD to JNB, HND and SCL.

As I understand it, CASA doesn't recognise the higher ETOPS rating for the B789 that it obtained when certified or shortly thereafter and would need to formally approve any higher time that would allow unrestricted QANTAS flights on the most economic circle routes, often close to Antarctica.

This would be an impediment for QANTAS commencing B789 services to JNB and SCL? I presume that any higher ETOPS rating will be a decision for CASA following a formal request from QANTAS. With B744s to be withdrawn by late 2020 there is not a lot of time to get this approval, if it is a convoluted process.

ETOPS was an issue with the Virgin B773 flights from MEL to JNB which were route restricted and ceased after operating for a short time.

Any further clarification or information on this topic would be most welcome.

You are 100% correct James the B789 is not certified to operate SCL & JNB based on what I have been told from a reliable source.
Qantas haven’t yet explained how they are going to operate these routes without the 747.
I believe the same restriction applies to the A380 so there will be no aircraft in the fleet to operate these routes unless approval is given by CASA

CASA does indeed permit the EDTO time necessary for QF (or anyone else, for that matter) to operate SYD-JNB and/or SYD-SCL. Rules changed in 2015.

Does QF have EDTO240 or 330 for the 787?

Not yet I believe, they are yet to gain approval for polar ops or EDTO240/330, however the changes made by CASA in 2015 were at the behest of QF and there has been significant ops of a similar requiement elsewhere for some time, just don’t mention the recent JQ 787 issue

Brenden you may need to recount the engines on those South African Airbuses.

I think you’ll find 4 engines under them, and lately those engines have been the underwhelming ones.

South African Airways currently operates A343s on its PER flights.
