Spitfires

Of the 7 World War 2 era Supermarine Spitfires currently on the Australian register, how many of those are currently airworthy?

Listed are:
IXT
ZPS
XVI
HET
CIQ
CIP
IXF

Hi Nigel, There are also the two Jabiru powered 80% scale Spitfires on the register.

VH-FUS
VH-YLK

The airworthy ones are not easy to track down, Spitfire Survivors - Now & Then has the two Lowey ones listed, but none of the others. This site seems up to date with content dated 2012.

VH-IXT - Destroyed in South Africa in 2002 ??
VH-ZPS
VH-XVI - Fully Airworthy - David Lowey
VH-HET - Fully Airworthy - David Lowey
VH-CIQ
VH-CIP
VH-IXF - Purchased by Col Pay in 2008 for authentic restoration.

The two airworthy ones are based at Temora.

One or two (depending on maint) normally fly on the fly days.

Worth a visit.

VH-HET has just completed an engine overhaul with Vintage V 12s in the USA, where Temora's chief engineer spent many weeks gaining valuable experience on the complex Merlin V12. The Spitfire MkVIII was scheduled to return to the skies yesterday, all going well with the ground runs and flight checks last week.

VH-IXT TE566 was purchased by Aviation Australia in 2002 for restoration to static. It has since been sold to Europe to Martin Cobb and arrived in 2011. Aviation Australia also has LZ844 which they too sold to Martin

I think there is also a small number of Jabiru powered scaled down examples on the RAAus register , which would not carry VH registrations .
