Crime scene established on Virgin plane

The Australian Federal Police has taken over an investigation into reports of smoke on board a Virgin Blue aircraft that landed at Melbourne Airport this morning. Passengers and cabin staff reported smelling smoke as flight DJ302 from Brisbane began its descent just before 8am. Emergency services greeted the plane and six of 160 passengers were assessed by paramedics but did not require further treatment.

Earlier, Victoria Police set up a crime scene on the aircraft to preserve the area. An Australian Federal Police spokeswoman said this afternoon it was now heading the investigation. She said there had been reports of smoke coming from the rear galley of the plane. A Virgin Blue spokeswoman said it was standard procedure for the AFP to investigate and the airline believed the investigation would conclude shortly.

She said it was believed the smoke had come from an oven in the galley. "On its descent to Melbourne there was a smoke odour reported by the cabin crew coming from the galley. Some passengers reported smelling the smoke as well," the spokeswoman said.

"We have removed the oven from the plane to determine what happened."

As long as the AFP don't "cook" the evidence !

Well they have to establish the cause first - when this article was posted no-one knew specifically what it was, just that it seemed to originate in the galley.

How can it be an oven Virgin do not use them unless it is a three hour flight or more.Me thinks the spin doctors are doing some spinning.

It doesn't have to be in operation to have a fault. Or who knows, someone might have left it on from a previous flight.

they are used for crew meals
