Interesting that they have gone for Runway 05/23, this was one of the three Runway options at Bankstown, before being closed in 1974. I would have thought a more North-South direction would suit the prevailing winds.

As someone who is constantly putting up with the joke that is Sydney Airport, I cannot wait for a new airport! Here's hoping they design it so that it's much more flowing and user friendly.

Just looking at the Runway 05-23 alignment, straight in/out approaches/departures from the west will take aircraft right over the top of the Warragamba catchment area. In the other direction they will track right over the Prospect water supply, Parramatta, Macquarie Park and the Northern Beaches.
The flightpath planning will be interesting, considering Camden, Bankstown and Sydney are quite close.

Hopefully by the time it's up and running, RNP approaches with curved flight paths will make it a much more efficient approach than the current arrangement at YSSY. That will most likely negate approach paths extending well out from the runways.
Personally, I don't see a massive noise or flight path impact from Badgery's Creek by the time it commences operations. The advancement in technology should help. Mick |
