Who Flew First?
On Monday ABC screens Who Flew First? a docu-drama that will challenge the notion that the Wright Brothers were the first to fly in December 1903. This is produced by Artemis International (Who Do You Think You Are?). Who Flew First is a docu-drama about the controversy over the world’s first motorized flight. Every school child is taught that the brothers Orville and Wilbur Wright flew first in December 1903. But the Australian aviation expert John Brown claims that the German born immigrant to the US, Gustave Whitehead, flew two years before the Wright Brothers, in August 1901 in Bridgeport Connecticut and he has evidence to back his case. Opposing Brown are historians supporting the official view that the Wright Brothers flew first. They claim that the 17 eye-witness accounts from the 1930s attesting to Whitehead’s flights are unreliable. But a discovery is made that in return for the right to display the 1903 Flyer in their museum, the Smithsonian Institution agreed that it will never claim that anyone flew before the Wright bothers. History may not be as certain as we thought. 9.20pm Monday December 5th on ABC. |

ACI Season 16
Has restarted with: s16e07 - Murder in Skies On 24 March 2015, Germanwings Flight 9525 enters a high-speed descent and crashes into the French Alps during a flight from Barcelona, Spain, to Düsseldorf, Germany. All 150 people on board are killed. The investigation concluded that the crash was caused by an act of murder-suicide by the co-pilot. s16e08 - River Runway On 16 January 2002, on final approach to Yogyakarta at the end of a routine domestic flight from Ampenan, Garuda Indonesia Flight 421 suffers a double engine flameout while flying through a severe thunderstorm and ditches in the Bengawan Solo River. 59 of the 60 people on board survive. s16e09 - Deadly Solution On 28 December 2014, Indonesia AirAsia Flight 8501 stalls and crashes into the Java Sea while flying through a thunderstorm, killing all 155 passengers and 7 crew members on board. The causes of the crash were a malfunction of the rudder travel limiter unit and an inappropriate response by the pilots. s16e10 - Afghan Nightmare On 29 April 2013, just seconds after taking off from Bagram Airfield in Afghanistan, National Airlines Flight 102 stalls and crashes into the ground, killing all seven crew members on board. The investigation determined that the aircraft's cargo had shifted dangerously backwards, causing the loss of control. Not sure if Ch7 will pick up this series |

Tomorrow night (Anzac Day Night) the ABC is repeating "The Real Great Escape" 21:33 to 22:03.
It’s one of cinema’s memorable moments: American Steve McQueen powering a motorcycle through paddocks and hurtling over fences after breaking out of a German POW camp. Small problem… Among the 76 Allied airmen who escaped via the ingeniously built tunnels under Stalag Luft III, there was not one American. There were, however, six Australians. http://www.abc.net.au/foreign/content/2016/s4656967.htm If you are interested in the story I can recommend "A True Story of the Great Escape" by Louise Williams https://www.allenandunwin.com/browse...-9781743313893 A good read ... |
