I have some questions as to the down time of the 787. This is purely an observation so that is why I'm throwing it out there to see if any body as some ideas. When the 787 first started I think it was on a daily mel cns mel ool mel, currently it seems to be doing just a mel dps mel or syd dps syd with the plane sitting on the ground idle for quite some time. Using flightaware and tracking VKA, it is idle for approx. 12 hours in MEL. I know they will be doing a mel akl mel soon so maybe this will make better use of the aircraft, as its isn't making money sitting on the ground. I have heard about the issues re performance on certain routes and also other issues with certain aircraft, so is it a lack of crew or other issues? any thoughts? Paul

The 78 is rolling out on markets as the 332's return to Qantas.

Prior to operating on a route, the aircraft has to be certified to do so. This is a significant task of the airline, and takes some time.

The domestic flying was simply to qualify crews on the type, and bed in the aeroplane prior to international services.

The Denpasar services has ground time during the day, regardless if it were operated by a 78 or 332. As more services are rolled out, the utilisation will increase, including all three (and further deliveries) hulls, just as the 332's do.

It is a transition period.

Is there an issue with VH-VKB?
This aircraft, according to JetStar tracker, has only been on 23 international flights.
At the moment it is returning to Melbourne after flying up into South Australia and then returning to Victoria and doing circuits near Swan Hill as JST 7998. It has been flying for nearly 3 hours.

On FlightRadar24 it looks like they made it up to the Flinders Ranges, but with a flight number like JQ7998, it was probably a training or test flight. Other JQ flights with this ID have gone to Singapore, probably for maintenance.

VKB has been out of action for a few days so i assume it was just a test flight as Grahame said.

When VKE makes it in to service, that will be four in total. Recall seeing some commentary elsewhere on numbers this year but can't recall how many in service by 31 December 2014.

Is there any visibility of the plan for which flights and when 332's will be replaced ? So far, Denpasar and Phuket - what's next ?

What is the likely timing on SYD-HNL ?

When (or will) QF replace B767's with reconfigured 332's on the same route ?
