24 Hours At YSSY
So what does 24 hours of movements at YSSY look like ?
My son decided to do something similar to a number of US Youtube videos showing air traffic movements, compressing 24 hours in Sydney airspace down to 2min 15sec. This was achieved by sampling all the aircraft airborne every 20sec, then playing the data back in Google Earth (sped up 18 times), and recording the result. This recording was then edited in Final Cut Pro on the Macbook, and sped up an additional 20 times. The clip includes sunlight transition, the Runway in operation through the day, and also highlights cerfew hours. Watch The Video Watch out for the 3 or 4 aircraft orbiting to the east and north in the early evening. Watch the Evening Orbits

Hi everyone,
I've also created a 24-hour YSSY ADS-B time-lapse from my location using an RTL-SDR dongle with the small bundled whip antenna. My antenna is just near the window and not particularly high up, so I don't get clear line-of-sight in all directions, but for the directions I do have, I can get out to near Gunnedah, Parkes, Forbes, Cootamundra, Canberra and Narooma (i.e. around 300-350 km). Here's the video: (Don't forget to watch in HD) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BhQa2EBwC6g Nothing much happens until about 04:30, due to the curfew, when planes start coming in from the Parkes direction. The time can be seen in the bottom left corner. I can get the ground traffic at airport since I'm under 10 km from the airport, but you wouldn't be able to tell, due to the map scale in this video. Enjoy =). |
