SYD Departure 5.10am 27/5
Did anyone happen to know why a QF aircraft departed SYD this morning at approx 5.10am this morning?
I had just gotten dressed and heard a loud a/c noise and stepped outside to see a QF a/c flying towrds Parramatta (I live in Stanmore). I could even see that the cabin lights were on. |

QF6 VH-OJA conducted a missed approach due to 15kts tailwind on 34L and climbed out over that area

...which, of course, made MUCH less noise than if it had simply landed RWY16R...

Hi Brent,
I live in Newtown right under 16L/34R and close enough to 16R/34L and I heard it too... it woke me up I thought I was hearing things, so thanks for clearing it up today Cheers!

I wonder how much they're fined for breaking crufew - or was that cleared up after the BA pre-6am go around years ago?

If a crew is fined for deciding to go around for the safety of the crew, passengers and aircraft, then I would be absolutely appauled at the person who would have the guts to give them a fine.

However, BA was fined, IIRC. I expect the reasoning was something like "if you can't meet the requirements of the legislation, safety or not, then don't try and land in the shoulder" i.e. if you know tailwinds might make 34L marginal, stooge around for an hour...your problem, not ours"
I think AdamP's sarcy comment sums it up, but the curfew/shoulder are contentious issues. |

Is it not true that there is 3 or 4 international flights which have permission to land between 5-6am under certain conditions?

I recall quiet a few years ago (maybe 5 of 6yrs) flying in on QF6 from SIN landing at 5:38am with the requirement that engine reversers were not utilised. That was a 34L landing.
A couple of weeks ago I was inbound on QF2 from BKK and were in a holding pattern over northern NSW as we were about 30mins early and had to wait for the cerfew to be lifted...this however was a 16R landing. |

Yes, those conditions being 34L only, and I think no thrust reverse (happy to be corrected on that?).
