Default Ability to edit or delete posts

What has happened to the ability to edit or delete your own posts?
If you make a typo you cannot reaccess your post to rectify it.
Please explain.

Fred,
I think that function is only available for a certain period of time after the post has been made.

Cheers

The board setting is and always has been that you have 600 minutes to edit your post. After 5 minutes, it will automatically add an "edited by" tag if you edit a post.

We've never had the facility to delete a message, if you require something deleted please use the "report post" function to bring it to a moderator's attention.

OK. Thanks for that info.

Any particular reason for the 600 min limit on editing?

I would have thought 10 hours would be enough time to reconsider a response if required.

Apparently not. It was brought to my attention when Russell D couldn't edit his post in his trip report.
As I don't spend every waking hour on the forum, then no 10 hours is not enough. Also not having the ability to post while at work if I post something then go to work it will be 14 hours later so therefore no opportunity to edit a mistake I have made.
Is Nigel C's opinion to be taken as a moderators statement?

600 minutes has always seemed like a fair amount of time. The reason this restriction exists at all is so members don't miss new information - for instance if someone has posted an arrival time of a movement and then went back and edited it the next day, it would be very easy for people to miss the change - I see this sort of thing quite commonly on other forums.

Of course if everybody would like more time to edit their posts, we're happy to look into that, please let us know what you think.

Thanks David.

One vote from me to extend the time please. At least 24 hours. I do understand also about the arrival time changes. I would be inclined to make a new post to make it known to all as well.

Why would it? I'm certainly not a moderator, so no.

But I agree that's a fair call on work hours and access etc.

Default But show the edit

I don't object to extending the time limit if people don't have access at work, but I'd reduce the time before which the 'edited' flag is set to ensure that edited posts are clearly flagged as such. Apart from fixing typos and such like, which you normally catch within the first 10 minutes or so, I don't like the concept of non-flagged edits, especially when they can make a reply look stupid if a change has been made to a post to which you had replied! In fact, if the option exists, the edited flag should be set at the earlier of 1 hour or when a post is replied to.
