Default Flying in the US (And to/from)

Hey all,

Was wondering if anyone here has flown with Virgin America when travelling in the states and just wanted to get some feedback on what they are like?

I usually fly Southwest due to free baggage ( but paying extra for Priority boarding since there is no seat allocation) but was thinking of maybe flying with someone different as VA prices are pretty good for one way flights between SFO and LAS........

Also who do people prefer to fly with over the 4 carriers that head to LAX...
At this stage Im leaning towards Virgin Australia as they are the cheapest and do not charge for 2 checked bags (same as Qantas) where United and Delta do for an extra piece of checked luggage as the wife and I plan to take advantage of the strong Aussie dollar at the outlet malls..

Regards

Hey Flukey,

Have flown Virgin America (VX) from LAS to SFO and I couldn't fault them. Cabin mood lighting, free PTV and the service was great. It's a competitive route, so the fares are also usually pretty good. VX now also fly LAS-LAX.

If you are stopping in LA, then another option to LAS is JetBlue from Long Beach (LGB). One free checked bag and free PTV. Pilot comes out and greets the passengers before the flight. Can score flights for $39 at times. Long Beach itself is pretty cool for a day too

Also, both JetBlue and Virgin America use LAS's new Terminal 3.

In terms of across the Pacific, United don't have PTVs on their 747s, but if you have a tablet you will be fine. And SFO is a better layover airport than LAX if your travels don't need to include LA. but if you are going through LAX, I have liked VA and DL also. I prefer the dedicated terminals and customs than TBIT which QF use.

Hope to see you back in LAS soon!

Hope this helps.

Thx Jusbus on the info.

Have looked at Going direct to San Fran as Im heading there for the Packers v 49ers opener to start the trip (got tickets through the exchange) but found it cheaper to run through LAX with Virgin Aust. connecting with Virgin america or Southwest to sfo then go direct with United......

Will also being heading to Vegas so hopefully we can catch up again

HI Rob, last time i went i flew with NZ which i guess wasnt in your 4, drawback a stop in AKL but the times really worked well for me. I didnt arr at 6 or 7 am into LAX when back here its only around 2am and i should be asleep, you get in mid arvo and i was able to get a good sleep which really prevented any jetlag. The hotel was ready when i checked in so i didnt have to wait or book the night before and no worries picking up a car and driving with out feeling shattered, they do fly to SFO as well if thats where yo are going. Sounds like VX has a good product but WN is tough to beat, havent had a bad flight yet and you know there are no surpises, have a great trip

Hey Paul, Thx for the info, I did think about Air NZ as a direct option (via AKL) for SFO but the 2 bags with Virgin Australia sells it for me as the wife (and I LOL) plan to buy an extra suitcase each while over there and take advantage of the Aussie Dollar and the Outlet malls .....

Hey Justin when using a carrier like Virgin America, as they have a sale on atm I booked them for the SFO-LAS run, when do you pay for baggage? as here with Virgin Australia you do it at time of seat purchase but couldnt see that option while booking with them........

Regards

Re paying for baggage on VX, you can pre purchase online, otherwise at check-in you will have the option to select number of bags to check-in and pay then, either web check-in or airport kiosk check-in. Hope this helps.

Well it looks like there will be a change of arrivals for Virgin Australia flights into LAX effective 1/6/13

Quote:
From 1 June 2013, all Virgin Australia operated aircraft arriving into Los Angeles will be disembarking at the Tom Bradley International Terminal (TBIT) moving from our current location of Terminal 5. There will be no change to Virgin Australia operated flights departing Los Angeles and these will continue to depart from Terminal 3
With that in mind would it be best to allow 3 or 4 hours from arrival to a connecting domestic flight?

VA to DL was 90 min but they have now changed it to 120min but i assume thats with your bags tagged thru so you only have to drop them off. i would def go with the 3 - 4 hour connection as its hard to sympathy from any one in arrivals at TBIT if you do have a tight connection

Agreed. 3-4 hour connection is advised if arriving at TBIT.
