Decoding codesharing
As an infrequent visitor to YSSY, I am still trying to get a handle on a number of operational idiosyncrosies.
My biggest source of confusion revolves around the International arrivals/departures lists on the Sydney Airport site. Example being the 0940 departure to Auckland, which shows in order from top of page, Air Canada, Air China, ANZ, Asiana, Singapore, Thai and United, all using JO1 check-in. How does one determine which company aircraft actually operate this service? Is it top, bottom or random? Forgive my ignorance, I know I'm a greenhorn, but I'll never learn if I don't ask. From your list there the website obviously goes via alphabetical order.
In determining the operator of the service, it just goes on knowledge and is something you will have to learn. The only airline there that flies that route, let alone across the tasman out of that list is AirNewZealand. |

Another rough way to figure it out is to pick the lowest flight number. Most codeshares are in the very high number range, so the lowest flight number is most likely the operating carrier.
There are probably exceptions to this though, but should work a lot of the time. |

Exactly what I do Chris. Firstly determine and learn if that airline flies to that country, or secondly determine if it flies that particular route (sydney to the particular country) or if both of those ways fail you then learn the flight numbers and determine whether they are usual or unusual numbers to be using.
Hope this helps. |

John,
As a rough guide, the codeshare routes usually have four digit flight numbers for non-Qantas flights, although that is not always the case (for example Aerolineas Argentinas and Viva Macau have a four digit flight number for their operated flight to Sydney - but there are no codeshares with these flights so they are easy to separate). Qantas codeshare flights operated by other carriers are usually three digit flight numbers beginning with a 3. Hope this helps.

Hi John,
I usually use Flightstats to search for an airport's flights. It has an option to hide codeshares so you just see the actual flights. It also tells you what type of aircraft is flying. If you click on the green circle over sydney on the map, you have to option to see the arrivals and departures pages. Gareth.
