Money exchange
With the passion in aviation, Im sure there are a few regular overseas travellers on the forum.
When you exchange for foreign currency, how do you go about it? I am going to spent the the majority of this year overseas, combination of work followed by a european trip and the end of the year. I plan to cover six different currencies I am looking for the most economical process. On the last big trip I ended paying about $300 worth of fees and a big jar full of currencies that dont exist anymore. I guess it is about knowing how much you are going to spent before you go..any ideas or tips would be helpful.

Hi Andrew, no need to quote the whole thread when it's just above, thank you - mod
I usually do ~$100 worth here so I have pocket money when I get there, and then do the rest there. In the main, I stay away from airport exchange offices, although some are quite competitive if they don't have to pay exhorbitant rents (i.e. Singapore). Cheers

I always order online through Westpac as there are no commission charges. They team up with American Express and you can order multiple currencies and select if you would like them in small, large or mixed denominations. You can pay via B-Pay and select a Westpac branch or Amex office for collection. It usually takes two business days from when they receive your B-Pay payment, but they notify you of your collection period during the order process.
I'm not sure how the rates differ from other means, but I find this convenient for me. Upon return to Australia, if transitting through Singapore Changi I exchange for no commission at an exchange booth in the airport, but if I am not using a commission free airport at departure/transit/arrival, I usually exchange back in Australia, pay commission (per currency) and get the QF FF points they offer for the transaction. If you are interested in checking Westpac out, on their website select "International" from the left hand menu column and then "Travellers Cheques and Foreign Currency" and proceed from there. Hope this helps.
