Default Boeing to cut 10,000 jobs this year

From todays telegraph...

Quote:
BOEING will reduce its workforce by some 10,000 this year in response to the global economic crisis, chief executive Jim McNerney said.

"The global economy continues to weaken, and it's affecting air traffic and financing," McNerney said after the aerospace giant released its quarterly results.

"We must prepare the company, including being more aggressive in terms of productivity."

He said the 10,000 cuts would be made "through attrition, retirement and layoffs," and included a figure announced earlier of 4500 in the commercial aircraft division.

I hope none of these are associated with the 787, or it'll be another two years by the time it gets delivered

From the article I got the impression 4500 will go from commercial aircraft division (all commercial airliner production incl. 787 project???) the other 5500 must be from other areas of the company, maybe office workers or something of that sort?

You would have to assume Boeing would not be cutting the 787 workforce given the already extended delays.

Would the Military Division not be one of their better peforming areas at the moment? Considering just about all their orders are from government agencies who are still financially capable even in the financial crisis.

BOEING is refusing to speculate on how many Australian workers will lose their jobs as a result of a 6 per cent across-the-board cut in the US aerospace giant's global workforce.

The company employs 3800 people in Australia in a variety of businesses and has already shed about 500 jobs at its Hawker de Havilland subsidiary in Melbourne.

It revealed the new global job target of 10,000 reductions after it reported this week a fourth-quarter loss of $US56million ($84.9 million).

"As announced in December, the company expects first flight of the 787 to occur in the second quarter of 2009 and deliveries to begin in the first quarter of 2010," the manufacturer said.

Further info in todays Australian newspaper Aviation section.

Hopefully the first flight forecast is on target!
