Default Military Aircraft Lighting

This is probably a stupid question but I was wondering why military aircraft have a yellow strip in some areas along the fuselage and at night it’s a fluro green colour.

do these light up during the night like a solar panel or switched on in the flight deck?
and also what’s the name and purpose of it?

Thanks joe

I believe they are there to allow pilots to keep formation at night.

They are as Steve said to help keep formation at night. They are less intense than the normal navigation lights so are less likely to be seen by the enemy. A lot a aircraft now have a black stripe under the yellow. These are NVG (night vision goggle) compatible formation lights.
