Qantas won't be operating into a 1100M unsealed strip (CXQ), particularly with a 737 , so it begs the question , where is CKW ?...

There was a new airstrip being built at Christmas Creek as part of Fortescue's expansion project there.

The Christmas Creek Airport is being built to allow workers to FIFO from there directly instead of FIFO Cloudbreak 60km away and wasting time catching buses over to Christmas Creek. There is also no ILS at Cloudbreak, which has meant diversions to the coast waiting wx, and the Christmas Creek aiport was meant to be getting ILS.

I worked at Christmas Creek for a while and there was alot of angst with wx causing delays getting home after 2 weeks away at work.

There won't be an ILS at Christmas Creek, but rather QF is implementing RNP approaches there which will provide a very similar approach minima and hopefully reduce any weather related diversions.

As far as I know it's a brand new airport and QF737s will be the first to operate there. QantasLink 717s and Network F100s will continue to service Cloudbreak.
