Default B744 VH-OEE Flying With One Winglet

An Odd Sight But Totally Safe

Qantas B744 VH-OEE operated QF25/26 Sydney-Haneda-Sydney over the weekend with its starboard winglet missing. The B744 CDL (Configuration Deviation List) allows for safe operation of the aircraft with one winglet missing. Boeing also produced a Domestic B744D model with no winglets for the Japanese Market, and the type was operated by both JAL an ANA.

VH-OEE is seen here on short final for Runway 16R at Sydney Airport this morning.

Not too odd for OEE, she travelled the world in 2006 for a time with the same wing let missing after a collision with the fence at JFK, OJI had the same missing in 2013 for a while. OJC’s retirement flight also saw her depart sans Starboard winglet. If you get reincarnated as a 744 winglet I suggest choosing the Port winglet for a longer life!
