A mate of mine is flying up to cooly tomorrow with his family and is taking his sat nav with him.He was wondering if he can turn it on on the aircraft when flying

http://yssyforum.net/board/showthread.php?t=7464 Basically, you're contravening a Civil Aviation Regulation which carries possible penalties and if you were a passenger on one of my flights and you decided to disregard my directions as the Pilot in Command of the aircraft, then I'd do my best to ensure the full extent of the law was used to penalise you. I'm curious to know why any passenger would need to use a sat nav system onboard a commercial RPT aircraft? Perhaps they don't trust the pilots ability to navigate safely to the destination? If it sounds stupid, it probably is!
Just like people who are so self-absorbed/important they can't turn their mobile phones off. Just like people who are so miserably impatient they can't wait for the seat belt sign to be extinguished. To bolster their coffers, perhaps the airlines could introduce harsh financial penalties for breaches of aviation regulations (ie: any of the above). You stand up early, you get fined $500. You're phone rings outside of a prescribed period where phones may be turned on, you get fined $1,000. Mick F and I rarely agree (except regarding Navara's and their Nissanly awesomeness), however this is one of those occasions where I fully support the full arm of the law being laid down upon people in breach of a C.A.R. Just like people who use mattocks to damage ADF helicopters, but that's for another day

Maybe I would be more inclined to turn my phone off in flight if the crew were to set an example by doing the same. I know of numerous cases where crew have left their phones on for the duration of the flight only to have them ring on final approach when they are back in a mobile reception area.

That's a silly argument Nathan. Which analogy are you using to make your argument valid ? The one about if they all jumped off a cliff you would too ? Or the one that because they are allegedly doing something wrong, you can do it too and that makes it right ?
